As a busy-minded person, I’ve always been fascinated by ashrams and centers that help people learn mindfulness and meditation. I am especially fascinated by the idea that chores—like doing dishes or folding laundry—become opportunities to practice mindfulness.
I always thought if I could manage to associate chores with a contemplative practice, I’d be #winning, right?
So I’ve decided that’s exactly what I’m going to do. It turns out, there is evidence to support the benefits of this approach. In a small study, researchers at the University of Florida had subjects read a short mindfulness dishwashing passage before they started on the task of scrubbing away.

While washing the dishes, one should only be washing the dishes. This means that while washing the dishes one should be completely aware of the fact that one is washing the dishes. At first glance, that might seem a little silly. Why put so much stress on a simple thing? But that’s precisely the point. The fact that I am standing there and washing is a wondrous reality. I’m being completely myself, following my breath, conscious of my presence, and conscious of my thoughts and actions. There’s no way I can be tossed around mindlessly like a bottle slapped here and there on the waves.
I never would have guessed the result: The researchers found that people who washed their dishes mindfully—focusing on the soap, enjoying the water temperature, cherishing the scrubbing and so on—gained 25% more feeling of inspiration, and lowered their stress levels by 27%.
It reinforces this idea that everyday activities attacked with intentionality and awareness can enhance our mindfulness!
