Should We Make Organic Cotton Face Masks?

Posted by Steve Reble on

Here's the situation.  Coronavirus is in full swing and the tools we have to 'flatten the curve' are evolving.

This is what we know for sure:

Hand hygiene is essential: a 20 second soap and water hand wash is your best bet, followed by hand sanitizers and other disinfectants.

"Soap is more than a personal protectant; when used properly, it becomes part of a communal safety net. At the molecular level, soap works by breaking things apart, but at the level of society, it helps hold everything together. Remember this the next time you have the impulse to bypass the sink: Other people’s lives are in your hands."

(The New York Times, Ferris Jar, March 20, 2020)

Social distancing appears to be working: Whether you have symptoms or not, you may be a carrier and as a result, social distancing has become an essential tool for everyone - with or without symptoms.

"There is going to be a natural lag or delay between when you implement successful interventions to reduce the spread of disease and when you see the actual number of reported cases peak or begin to drop.

So, the first few weeks of social distancing might be discouraging. But I believe that eventually we’ll see the number of new cases drop—thanks in large part to the social distancing we’ve been doing."

(University of Michigan, David Hutton, March 30, 2020)

Wearing a face mask is effective: We know that N95 face masks work best, but they are in limited supply and - for now - it is generally agreed that supplies should be kept for front line workers.  This brings up the next question...

Should we all be wearing masks, and if so, where should we get them and what should they be made of?

There has been a lot of debate about the wearing of masks - some scientific and some cultural.  The opinions vary greatly depending on the Country of origin.

Chinese Perspective

In China, George Gao, director-general of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) over the past 2 months claims that the biggest mistake western countries are making is not ensuring everyone is wearing a mask:

"The big mistake in the U.S. and Europe, in my opinion, is that people aren’t wearing masks. This virus is transmitted by droplets and close contact. Droplets play a very important role—you’ve got to wear a mask, because when you speak, there are always droplets coming out of your mouth. Many people have asymptomatic or presymptomatic infections. If they are wearing face masks, it can prevent droplets that carry the virus from escaping and infecting others."

(Science Mag, Jon Cohen, March 27, 2020)

US Perspective

By contrast, in a February 29th tweet, US Surgeon General, Jerome Adams said:

“Seriously people- STOP BUYING MASKS! They are NOT effective in preventing general public from catching #Coronavirus, but if healthcare providers can’t get them to care for sick patients, it puts them and our communities at risk!”

It seems that in recent days, however, the US may be reconsidering its position and encouraging the general public to start using cloth masks, while saving supplies of the hospital grade (N95) masks for front line workers.

"Officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are considering altering the official guidance to encourage people to take measures to cover their faces... according to a federal official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because it is an ongoing matter of internal discussion and nothing has been finalized....

The official said the new guidance would make clear that the general public should not use medical masks — including surgical and N95 masks — that are in desperately short supply and needed by health-care workers.

Instead, the recommendation under consideration calls for using do-it-yourself cloth coverings, according to a second official who shared that thinking on a personal Facebook account. It would be a way to help “flatten the curve,” the official noted.

Such DIY cloth masks would potentially lower the risk that the wearer, if infected, would transmit the virus to other people. Current CDC guidance is that healthy people don’t need masks or face coverings."

(Washington Post, Joel Achengack, Lena H. Sun and Lena H. Sun, March 30, 2020)

How Do You & etee Fit In?

We have several thousand meters of organic cotton fabric that we were planning to use to launch our foodwraps and bags in Europe.  That opportunity has fallen through and our wrap sales have also slowed down in recent months.

As a business, we are surviving the pandemic, but it has had an impact and like many businesses right now we (and everyone who works for us) are vulnerable, so we are considering using our organic cotton fabric for mask production.

We would like to set it up as a buy-one, donate-one offer where we could both help the larger community by donating the cotton masks to community groups in need (for example, one local hospital is requesting cotton masks for visitors or to use over top of N95 masks) and continue to operate our business.

Having reviewed the Science about cotton masks we feel that they are a useful tool - not a perfect solution - in slowing the rate of infection.  We believe, for the general population, cotton masks result in a "I protect you <> you protect me" situation by limiting the number of droplets that exit your mouth and reducing the amount you touch your face.

What do you think?  Would you support this project?  Let us know in the comments below.

  • I am a nursing student and healthcare worker at two major hospitals in a large city in the US. It looks as though you have done your research here, nice work! I would be surprised if the CDC does not recommend the use of homemade masks for the general public soon. Some of the most sensible advise I have heard for slowing the spread of this virus is to behave as if you know that you are infected. That would mean shielding others from exposure to you by wearing a mask when you have to leave the house. I applaud your forward thinking and the generosity you have included in your plan. You have my vote!

    Julia on
  • Yes of course you should make these. The Gov Newsom of California is going to require the general public to wear homemade masks when out in public. This is a no brainer. Go for it!

    Linda Saunders on
  • I would support

    Pat Rhodes on
  • I would definitely support this!

    Michelle on
  • Medical professionals are wearing the cloth masks over the one N95 mask they get for the day, in order to prolong the use of the N95 mask. They can be washed and worn again the next day.

    Sue T on
  • I would support!

    Deirdre Hosler on
  • Yes, make masks! A local quilt shop here (DomesticityStudio.com, in Baltimore) has coordinated with local hospitals and is coordinating three different styles of masks that volunteers can drop off. Incidentally, some include wire, but others want just a pocket (for a wire to be added later by the hospital), as those masks as microwaved before distribution.

    Sue T on
  • Yes, please. I’ll order one. I want to be helpful by not spreading potentially infectious droplets, and I want this company to do well.

    Nicole on
  • I am public health official in PA and recently had this topic researched as part of our COVID-19 operations. The conclusion from multiple sources is that the home made masks, even with a filter between the fabric layers, is just a tad bit better than no mask at all. They are more likely to provide a false sense of security than actual protection. On the other hand, looking at the supply chain challenges the US is experiencing, these may be resorted to in some situations. I hope it is with full disclosure of their limited effectiveness.

    Charlotte A Berringer on
  • Yes I would. Love the idea.
I wish you success and health.

I also volunteer in So. California and our group is thinking of providing washable masks to seniors in our area. There are individuals locally that are charging $5 to $15 each. One lady is offering to donate for every two you buy. Our group was thinking of providing materials to senior citizen groups and give them to local senior residents. I personally am buying four now from a local person.

Do make them. BUT pre shrink the fabric so people can throw them in their wash machine and dryer and not have them shrink and not fit. I produced a line of clothes many years ago and always preshrunk every fabric, including silks and cotton velvet.

It seems that we are moving toward everyone (who has not had coronavirus) should wear a mask when out in public. So Demand is likely to be high. Consider making a bias tape tie for some instead of elastic. People who wear them for long times say their ears get sore from the elastic rubbing. on their ears.

Gail Stallings

April 2, 2020
Update to my previous (I apologize...long) post. Yes do cotton masks! One of the benefits of wearing a cotton covering on your face is that you will touch it less....and reduce that chances of transferring Coronavirus (and anything else) to yourself or your loved ones.
I still would like to see a lot of UF COVID-19 Alternative Masks produced for hospital workers, and thought of ETEE when I saw they were being made of repurposed fabric, but I am not sure how that would work since they are under patent. If you can acquire the fabric from a local medical facility (surge center, dentist, veterinary...), check with UF about any constraints (especially if not a straight donation.) Here is their updated link: https://coronavirus.ufhealth.org/ppe-donations/

April 2, 2020
I completely agree with this logical proactive measure. I think we could slow the devastating economic curve if we could feel safe to go to work etc. just by wearing protective masks. ONE THING though, everyone needs to understand how to apply, remove and handle them without contaminating anything or yourself. I believe this is the one reason the CDC is stating masks won't help?

Katherine H Baker, Ph.D.

April 2, 2020
I have been a research microbiologist for over 35 years (included the title - Ph. D. after my name for credential proposes). Washable cotton masks would be an an excellent idea. Not perfect at stopping transmission of the virus, but any reduction is useful. This is particularly the case for the general public where our exposure to high concentrations of viruses is unlikely. Furthermore, cotton masks would remind people of the importance of good practices to prevent transmission - social distancing, don't touch your face etc. Finally, and most importantly, if people used cotton masks it would reduce the demand for N95 and similar masks making more of these professional masks available to the health care professionals who need them. PLEASE MAKE THESE ASAP

I think that is an excellent idea for the use of your fabric. The past two weeks I have been sewing cotton masks for medical clinics in my area and individual who need them. It was a great way to use up the Cotten fabrics left over for many sewing projects. The masks I make are more like the N95 and installing the metal nose piece between the two layers of fabric with special lining does take more time. In addition to the masks I have been requested to make cloth head coverings ( like a shower or scrubs cap) for the medical workers. This could also be another PPE item you could make with your fabric. Good luck with this new campaign because any medical PPE that can be made would be a great help to do many during these difficult times now.

April 2, 2020
YES, YES, YES! HOW CAN YOU NOT MAKE MASKS? I have been researching how to make masks and see that the one thing lacking is the small nasal metal strip to form the mask across the bridge of the nose. I knew there are finger strips for forming a splint that also have a foam lining and can be cut with scissors. I found a supplier but they were not reputable. I found another supplier on eBay but I have not gotten an answer back about how many pieces are in their $16 package. I am wondering what we could stitch inside like coffee filter or other less porous fabric that would make these masks even more effective. We all need to think outside the box. I see masks with strings/ribbons and elastic - use what you have or whatever you can get. Thank you for stepping up.
I would buy about $1,000 worth and tell my local Kaiser to contact you.

Robin Crane

April 2, 2020
Excellent idea, as the US Govt is considering mandatory face masks in public (the Chinese had it right a month ago) these will be in short supply, considering the hoarders out there. The price must be reasonable, though. We just need something to stop the drops from traveling.

While I love your products, they are fairly pricey in Canada with exchange rates/duties, etc (too pricey for the average Canadian to fill their house with and use daily).
For myself or other Canadians to purchase etee masks in this time of only basic necessities, the price would need to fit this model. If etee desires and has the means to make these masks at an affordable price point for Canadians, I’m sure there would lots of purchasing from us up north!

According to the Center for disease control three layers of cotton with a pocket for a filter of 2 tissues or paper towel can actually be up to a 70% effective filter against viruses. Of course the filter would need to be changed every 4 hours and the mask needs to be washed and changed when damp.

I firmly believe that by having EVERYONE wear a mask when out will decrease the spread of this virus. It is a respiratory illness which requires a living host with the desired medium-moisture to live and prosper. Each time a person exhales tiny particles are expelled into the air. Charts show that these particles fall short compared to a sneeze or cough BUT what about air currents?? By wearing a mask you protect yourself from others and others wearing masks are protected from your win-win. The best mask to make would be at least three layers with an inside pocket(side against your face)to allow for a filter to increase the mask's effectiveness. Studies have shown that simply using a mask made out of prewashed/dried cotton filters possibly 50%. Protect yourself and don a mask when out in the public.

Yes, great idea. I am right now sewing some masks for my family but I’m not a great seamstress. I would be interested in buying well made masks from you and donating a mask for each that I buy.

Tonya Finnegan

April 2, 2020
If CDC says “cotton masks” are helpful...I would def purchase.

April 2, 2020
Make the masks.
We’re a community and need to behave like one. The N95’s are needed for our healthcare workers!!!

Elyse Maltin

April 2, 2020
Absolutely. I'm dubious about the ability of masks to protect us from spreading/getting the virus, BUT the one thing doctors have made very clear is that they can help train us to stop touching our faces so much, which is the single best thing after washing our hands that we can do. So YES PLEASE! I for one would rather have something like this than a bandanna over my face!

Nicole

April 2, 2020
Yes! Make them!

Lisa

April 2, 2020
Yes. Make them; I like the donation idea too.

Of course it’s a good idea. Do it.

Tee

April 2, 2020
Great idea. I work in a hospital and we are now asking staff to wear procedure masks while at work, which is using up a lot of masks. Washable ones would work great for non front-line staff. The ones we had made locally have 2 layers of 100% cotton with a polypropylene filter in between. Is that a possibility? Also they had a soft wire at the top to tighten it around your nose.

Robyn

April 2, 2020
I am a healthcare worker in Florida ,yes make them. You will probably not be able to keep up .just need to make sure nothing is getting through mask , droplets wet, ect. I work in a hospital would sell .

Mary Huneke

April 2, 2020
Yes. Your approach seems very well reasoned. Go for it.

Bill Hawes

Yes, I would support this and think you are on the something very good. How fast can you get this into production? I would buy many.

Jo Sanders

April 2, 2020
Again and again, Steve, you hit the nail on its proverbial head!
YES, anyone that has the ability to make masks - especially those that are washable (in the HOTTEST temps) for re-use is the best.
I work in a hospital environment here in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and everyone here is masked and gloved. Everyone.
The adage that "we are all in this together" could never be more appropriate now!!!
Palms joined with thanks for your heart-work and care... all ways!
Jo

April 2, 2020
Definitely!!!!!!!!!

Gin

April 2, 2020
Yes. If your business can make masks that are washable for reuse and customers understand they are not medical grade masks but for the general public and must be washed immediately after use once they are home, then do this. Anything that can help my fellow healthcare workers and all Canadians is a positive feel good idea.

Wanda

April 2, 2020
This is a wonderful idea! I would suggest making a mask that comes with a set of filter layers which can be changed after use. I would be happy to feature your mask project on my blog www.savetheworldeveryday.com - you can contact me at wanda@savetheworldeveryday.com to help spread the word. I'm currently making masks to give away (the most recent post is about the fitted pattern I'm using) but it takes about 90 minutes to make a single mask, so obviously not making a huge impact! Thank you for doing this!

Sheila Richards

April 2, 2020
Yes, go for it. Lots of people here in Canada have started to make them. But there are lots who don't sew and would be happy to buy and donate.

Lisa White

April 2, 2020
Yes! I think that’s an excellent idea!
The cost is what’s going to matter. Some can’t afford to purchase one if the cost is high. I myself am a Home Care Aide and need several on hand at a time. There are OT’s, PTS, and RNs that are in and out of the house on a daily basis. I need to make sure that my patient/resident is protected.
Thanks!!!

Ruth

April 2, 2020
Great idea!

Beverly

April 2, 2020
Great idea! I'd gladly buy ones for myself and my husband, but knowing that the purchase would donate two to a worthy cause would make it even better!

Janet Giersch

April 2, 2020
Yes, I would support your mask project! It's obvious that we're all in this together & at the same time we're all on our own without much support from our government. I would be willing to purchase a few for family & friends! Do it!

Whitney

April 2, 2020
Yes, do it, I'm in for a dozen. Also, I think you should make an option at checkout for people to donate additional masks (for a price). If the price is right, I think you'll be startled at the number of additional masks people will find to go out to communities in need. Go for it!!!

Susan Beale

April 2, 2020
It is a great idea. I work in healthcare and useable masks are vital. But I also agree with the transportation issue. If you sent me a mask where does the free one go? To my hospital? To a hospital that will receive ALL the free ones? Overall great idea

Sophia

April 2, 2020
I say go for it - it's clearly NOT a profit grab like some companies are sadly doing. This is a way for your customers to support you during a difficult time, while also supporting donations to those in need. Win win :)

Connie

April 2, 2020
I think this is a great idea. I hope more companies will use their resources and imagination to not only stay in business, but to help the world in anyway they can.

Frances Bleviss

April 2, 2020
Absolutely do it! Nice to be able to protect ourselves while protecting someone else.

Carly

April 2, 2020
I definitely support this! I've been looking at ways I could either make or purchase a reusable mask, and would love to support a buy-one, donate-one initiative!

Valerie Farschman

April 2, 2020
GREAT IDEA! I have cotton here at home, so I am laundering it and making masks for friends, neighbors and medical professionals. However, there are people out there who 1. do not know how to sew, or 2. do not have any fabric, so they would probably be willing to buy 1 donate 1. Please consider a 3rd layer in between your 2 cottons- cotton batting, or a "filter" like a HEPA vacuum bag, etc. It takes more than mere cotton fabric to protect. Your mask looks great otherwise. And YES WE SHOULD ALL BE WEARING MASKS here in the USA. I already wear mine. Problem is the social and cultural stigma that too many people have about wearing them in public (hubby refuses to wear his). Hopefully "pride" will not kill us all, and Americans will embrace this life saving accessory in time.

DCorradini

April 2, 2020
Totally a yes. A friend of mine has made masks, but she can’t make enough for all of us. Plus we each need enough to wear and have in the laundry. Please make masks. Love the make one donate one. Act quickly please.

David

April 2, 2020
Yes, do it!

Marlene Sharon

April 2, 2020
Yes, make them! It would be nice if they could be fitted with a filter system - bamboo paper towel that can be inserted and removed and washed. One would have to wash masks after every use so the fabric needs to be very durable.

STephanie

April 2, 2020
I absolutely support this idea! I also agree with the comment that requested a pocket for an additional filter type material. I would use the pocket for adding a gauze with a bit of essential oil like oregano oil that is antiviral and antibacterial.
Your price point needs to be very reasonable in order for someone to purchase it. They are easy to make and as you know, the economy is having issues.

Ellen Thompson

April 2, 2020
Definitely would support this endeavor. Even here in a less populated area, the mask conversation continues.

chouns

April 2, 2020
totally support this. you already have the material and capability. i would recommend identifying densely populated communities who have difficult access to face protection in addition to front line workers. i am certain our etee community can support all the masks you produce.

Diane

April 2, 2020
Great idea especially now as they are talking about regular people wearing them. They need to be washed nightly in hot water and laundry detergent as Michael Garron hospital suggests.

Eileen

April 2, 2020
I appreciate the idea and intention. The only problem for me personally is that I am trying not to order items that have to be delivered because I don’t want to put others at risk for my own convenience. So I guess I am saying I would buy 2, one for me and one for my delivery person :-)

Karen

April 2, 2020
Great idea but I question if just the cotton layer is enough. I just saw a piece on Good Morning America that they talked about 2 layers, one being a filtering material. I like your vegetable bags, have intended to by more. I look forward to seeing more from you.

Sean Robitaille

April 2, 2020
I think this is a great idea. I also think the buy-one and donate-one is a terrific idea. Although this might not work for every Etee customer in my mind its consistent with how I think about the company.

Julie Angel

April 2, 2020
Some people are making cotton ones with a "pocket" to add filter material, like a folded Swiffer dust fabric that's disposable on top of washable cotton.

Toni kIllion

April 2, 2020
I’m a retired nurse and absolutely support this

Mary

April 2, 2020
Yes! This is a great idea, I would buy these for my family and be happy knowing each was accompanied with one to be donated.

Suzy T

April 2, 2020
Definitely! This sounds like a great move and I would buy one for each member of my family. I applaud your initiative in this!

Karen Olson

April 2, 2020
Definitely do this! It’s a good time to pivot the business to what’s currently needed.

Jenn

April 2, 2020
I think it would depend on if it’s a good mask that actually fits tightly. If not, it’s not worth it. I will say having organic cotton is a huge selling point especially to our family, as we strive to use only organic cotton when we can afford to.

Jackie

April 2, 2020
Yes - would support this idea. Really like the idea of buy one , donate one.

Riana Naude

April 2, 2020

April 2, 2020
I definitely think cotton face masks are the way to go. I would buy them for all my family to wear.

Lisa Grogan-Green

April 2, 2020
I would support the making of these masks and purchase them. N95’s are not available and I agree that masks stop people from touching their face. Having worn two types of n95’s, the best are with fabric elastic stays. The rubber elastic breaks. With surgical masks, they don’t fit tightly enough and the string is very easily broken. Please make sure you provide masks that fit well and don’t easily fall apart. Thanks for doing this. Good luck to you and your employees as well. Stay safe.

Catherine

April 2, 2020
Great idea. I would definitely buy - this isn’t going away any time soon and I would want to protect myself and children when we do start going out again. There are no surgical masks to buy and even if there were, we worry about ‘taking ‘ them from frontline healthcare staff. The sciencific opinion seems to be coming round to this idea and I read yesterday that wearing a face mask was identified as a key practice during the SARS epidemic a few years ago.. lots of conflicting info but why not try it? Thanks guys, wish you all well

B Payne

April 2, 2020
I don’t really think masks will help while wearing them out in the general public. They are not being worn properly by most people and I personally would not purchase any.

Karin

April 2, 2020
I think it's a great idea, please let us know when we can purchase some.

Carol

April 2, 2020
Yes, definitely. The latest I heard is that they are recommending everyone wear a mask when they go out. People in China wear them all the time. This epidemic is not going to disappear in a couple months. It will ebb and flow, so we will need masks for a long time to come.

Karen

April 2, 2020
I promote staying home except going out for absolute essentials, but 100% support the use of masks if you need to go out. Singapore and South Korea had much less transmission by using masks. Since we are still short of medical grade masks for health workers and first responders, cotton masks like this are the next best option. They remind you to not touch your face, and they are a good visual reminder for social distancing. I've seen online recommendations to make a pocket in the mask where you can add a piece of vacuum cleaner filter/furnace filter, etc. that helps to make it even more effective. I don't know if a pocket is a feasible feature for you to add?

Lucia Boddington

April 2, 2020
Agree with masks I would support

Coleen Swihart

April 2, 2020
Absolutely. Start making them now. When can my family order them?

Susanna Gordon

April 2, 2020
Definitely go for it. If there's enough demand for them by communities in need or healthcare professionals, you might also want to offer the option to buy additional masks to be donated to those who need them.

Lyn Pedro

April 2, 2020
I would definitely would support this project. Health care keep talking of flattening the curve and if we add facial mask to help then we are one step closer to lessen the spread. It may not be an N95 mask and it would not be to medical standards but it can help with prevention. Hope there are different sizes and easily adjustable. If it's like the other products. Then it's going to be a great product.

Anna

April 2, 2020
YEs, absolutely! Buy two, one donated is a great idea! With an oPtion to buy to donate also. The fabric is cute too (in the picture).

Gail Newman

April 2, 2020
These would be better than no mask but keep in mind they are cotton and so viruses can pass through that weave. Surgical masks of this style have a “metal” bar at the nose so you can bend it give a tighter seal around your nose plus this style of mask gaps at the sides and isn’t a tight fit at your chin area. Medical masks of this style are made of a denser material. Many years ago, when I worked in an operating room this type of cotton mask wasn’t allowed since it isn’t a very good barrier. Again, this is better than nothing but please still follow all safely precautions as if you weren’t wearing a mask.

Oksana Dexter

April 2, 2020
Yes - if you can go for it. I would support the buy two - get one/give one option as I can afford to buy a bunch.

Hello. I agree that we all should be wearing cloth masks if we have to be in a place with other people (grocery store or pharmacy, for example). I have made my own masks, and for my family, and some for a local senior residence. For people who do not sew, your idea is great. Please do it.

Absolutely! I am more than willing to support this effort. Most of us are trying to stay put, but each of us must have contact with another at some time every week. Wearing a mask is, at the very least, a symbol of caring for others. It is a compassionate and mindful way to signal to others our care for them. For many, it is an essential part of staying safe.

The sales clerk at our general dollar told me that he is about ready to lose his rental because the people he rents from are afraid to let him stay there. He is at the front lines risking his life so we can buy toilet paper and other goods. If kicked out he will be living in his car. He works almost everyday while others have quit and isn’t provided with gloves or a face mask. I would love to be able to buy one and give him one too!

Jennifer Campbell

April 2, 2020
Thank you! This message is incredibly thoughtful and professional and empowering. YES! I will support this endeavor and will promote it. another important point is that the more we wear the masks, the more we remind each other that this is real and that we need to take it seriously. the psychological aspect of this cannot be dismissed. additionally, it is important to note that if wearing mask, we will be much more aware of not touching our faces. Please do include safe mask wearing protocol to include removal, care, storage, etc. again, thank you for this opportunity to make a difference.

Yes. I would support this and buy from you. This week The NY Times published a pattern for making a mask. They seem to think there is merit in wearing them, especially for those of us who live in the NYC area. I was thinking of doing it myself, but do not have a sewing machine and hand stitching would be too difficult for me.

If you can, by all means.
I heard gov't was discouraging use of masks so that civilians were not taking supplies from front line workers but now the mentality is diy masks are sufficient for our needs. Coupled with face shields I think it's a good option.
Hopefully this will also reduce the amount of single-use garbage that we are now seeing tossed on the ground. Thank you for your consciousness #PlankTheCurve

Oh, btw, Joanne Fabrics is giving away mask starter kits, and their instructions might be of use to you, in making effective, reusable masks.

Marcy M

April 2, 2020
By all means make the masks. Wearing one should be the new normal!

Julie

April 2, 2020
I am making masks on my own extremely small budget, given that I am on disability, and nothing else. I can't afford to buy masks, but if you guys could donate a mask for every one I make (I can number them and send you pictures of you like) I know that it wouldn't help you, but it would at least prove that I am willing to sacrifice right along with you.

Ann Tomer

April 2, 2020
I am making my own masks. I would be willing to “buy it forward” by buying a mask for a stranger. You could have an option whereby people could buy a product and add on a donation to help fund masks. I really believe a lot of your customers would do it! Thanks for all our wonderfulness. Also, an article is today’s NYT said that it’s important for the material to have a high thread count AND be double sided. THANKS,

Jadwiga Brown

Yes, making cotton masks with “buy one, donate one” is a great idea for you and I hope you will be able to do it. I would suggest making different sizes— as a small adult who lives in an area of forest fires where masks (N95s in this case) have often been a summer necessity and when a local store finally was able to stock, small sizes, parents of young children and small adults like me were so grateful. Parents would be glad to be able to buy cotton masks for their little ones when they have to take them out. Thank you!

I just finished a batch of cotton masks lined with a non woven interfacing that I am sending to a facility that has NONE at the request of a friend. It was determined by a medical panel that the non woven fabric increased the effectiveness and the masks are washable. I will be starting on a batch without the filter(as I ran out) for family and friends to wear when they are out as the local authorities are asking people to wear them as an extra precaution. The non filtered ones are fine for this. There is a 3rd option available. When you make the masks leave a pocket or opening on the bottom that a disposable filter can go in. This can be a paper towel or coffee filter!! I even heard someone say you can actually cut up a clean vacuum cleaner bag! Anyway, I think it is definitely is a worth while project. Side note I have minor allergies in spring as I live on the prairies and it gets dusty when I’m walking the dog so I will continue using mine after this is all ove!

I would buy several masks if you made them. I’m broke as a joke because of this too but I love your company so I’d love to get a couple. I like to layer my masks and a scarf so it would to be nice to have a few to wash.

Kathy

April 2, 2020
Yes, I support this idea! ( I already like to wear the fashion masks from Asia, btw!) I like how you put it, sending the message we're in this together: "I protect you, you protect me" and bright, playful colours could spark a little joy in settings such as hospitals.

Anita

April 2, 2020
I think it's a great idea. Love the concept of buy one, donate one. Considering that things will get worse before they get better, I would support wearing a mask.

Annetta Smith

April 2, 2020
Yes, I definitely am interested, especially with the share one option. And, when this crisis is over , the washable face masks will still be useful for cleaning to protect from dust, mold, etc.

I like the sharing concept and would definitely wear it. Hope it never becomes the new normal, but one never knows.

April 2, 2020
Absolutely interested! A win-win and a beautiful thing to do. Have you thought considered using some charcoal, citric acid or merv 13 filters inside of the cotton?

Shola Charles

April 2, 2020
How soon could produce them? It is a good idea if you can do it quickly enough. We don’t know enough yet about how the virus spreads, but we should do all we can, in case it helps. To whom would we donate them - people who can’t afford them? I would be happy to participate.

Veronica

April 2, 2020
There is no harm in wearing a mask. In fact, the benefit is that you should utilize the mask to remind yourself not to touch your face. By the way, not touching your face and washing your hands is the best way to prevent yourself from getting sick. I would love it if, with every mask purchased another one goes to a homeless person. Homeless people don’t have the funds to buy a mask and having a mask as a reminder to not touch their face would be helpful. As far as what the masks should be made of the only choice right now I assume is fabric. Although cotton is unsustainable; you are using left our cotton that would otherwise go into the landfill so that’s awesome! It would also make the masks washable, which would be great! People can pop them in their washer along with their dirty clothes and use hot water for their washing cycle. Thank you for all that you do!

Shari

I am an ER doctor. The general public does not need N95. It would be awesome if you make simple surgical masks so the N95 could be reserved for the healthcare workers

April 2, 2020
Yes! Cotton masks are better than nothing & if the general public wears them, it may stop “silent spreaders” & control droplets more. The caveat is that when wearing a mask, people have a tendency to touch their face to adjust the mask so there would need to be instruction on that, how to properly wear it, how to wash it, etc. they should be in a pack of, day, 7...for a weeks worth so they can launder them. Overall, it’s a good idea. It won’t prevent you from GETTING COVID 19, but it may help. It will definitely help those that have it from infecting others if the mask is used right!

Great idea. LA’s Mayor is advising Angelenos to wear masks when shopping or doing other essential tasks. If they are readily available, perhaps people will stop ordering the medical grade masks.

Michele

April 2, 2020
Absolutely I would buy a mask. I think it's an amazing thing for any company (or individual) to donate at this time. Business is hard for everyone, and we all know that. Putting other people first is not only wonderful for karma and self-love, it'll bring loyalty for your company.

Pam S

April 2, 2020
Yes I think you should pivot to offer what the need is now - masks! Is the idea that they could be washed for reuse? Perhaps a pack of two or three masks and donate one.

David Bessette

April 2, 2020
Je trouve que c'est une excellente idée et serait intéressé d'en acheter!

Kate McKelvie

April 2, 2020
I think that’s a much needed commodity, and many of us aren’t really set up to sew our own masks! I would suggest also making some masks with ties rather than elastic, which is rough on the ears.

Abby B

April 2, 2020
Absolutely! We all need to do our part. You're supposed to wear a mask if you're sick to prevent spreading it. With possibly 50% of infected individuals being asymptomatic and contagious, everyone needs to wear masks. We all need to act like we are contagious, and stop acting like we're trying to prevent infection. You may be contagious and not know it. Wearing a mask is doing your part. This would be so amazing and I thank you Etee, for pitching in.

Yes, I would buy some. I like the buy one-give one idea- taking care of self/family, as well as others in society.

Daniel

April 2, 2020
An excellent idea you should put into action. Wearing masks as a social health move will likely not disappear after Covid has.

Koren

April 2, 2020
I am making some myself, you may consider incorporating a pocket for a replaceable filter, and wire in the top to help with a more snug fit. I have created a pattern if you are interested in looking at it. I am giving them away to healthcare providers and my neighbours.

Great plan buy one donate one.
What a relief I agree we should be wearing them. I am the high risk category not creative do not see.
Would love to support an american small business. Most of them if you can get them take forever as a scam or overseas business. Please do this soon. I can gift some others in same predicament and help medical personnel and a business. Three way win

Nina Fricke

April 2, 2020
Buy 1 donate 1 sounds good. I understand this is a difficult, actually unprecedented time & uncharted territory for many businesses. As a nurse, I would appreciate that people who walked up to me had a mask. As you noted, we don't know who is a carrier if they are asymptomatic.
Since you have the fabric, why not make up some & see what the response is?

Kim

April 2, 2020
I would absolutely support this! The buy one, give one is great too! I also use my large headwrap as a makeshift face covering...

April 2, 2020
I feel that we all must do our part. There is a lot of misinformation out there but if we are going out and about we owe it to others to think about them as well as ourselves. If a mask offers any protection for others than it is worth making and contributing as part of the solution.

Laura Fuller

April 2, 2020
I think we would be happy to support your efforts to make masks for people who have a need for them. My husband and I could each use 2 masks. I also may have some fabric that might work for you.
If you are interested let me know.

Amanda Ecret

April 2, 2020
I think this is a great solution to people wanting to wear masks that the obviously sick and medical professionals really need. That way, people get masks to reduce infecting someone else and touching their own face while also not adding to the shortage of medical masks.

April 2, 2020
Yes, i would support this because my daughter is asthmatic.

April 2, 2020
My granddaughter is a front line nurse and asked me to make masks for her. Not to replace the N95 but to cover it so it might last longer. The reusable washable ones make more sense for us as well as we might have to wear one when shopping for groceries. I make two designs, one with ties and one with elastic bands.
I think what you are proposing is excellent. I support it.

April 2, 2020
I think yes, because even though they are not N95 level masks, they are way better than nothing. Besides, even without a pandemic, people who have asthma (I do) often wear masks when there is a lot of pollen in the air or if the air is bad for any number of reasons ...pollution, a fire somewhere that makes smoke, going to a store where there will be people wearing perfume..I could go on. I often wear a mask and I wore one before the Coronavirus. I will buy some if you make them.

Yes, I would totally support making masks! I think that non-medical-grade, reusable masks are also needed. I'd love to see them in bright colours and patterns to help take away from the fact that they are masks.

Jane

April 2, 2020
Wonderful idea.

Wendy

April 2, 2020
I definitely would support this effort. Cotton masks worn in low risk situations can free up medical masks for those working directly with patients. Additional benefits might include pockets which allow for the placement of metal nose pieces or the additional protection possible from a cut up HEPA vacuum cleaner bag.

Richard E Hane

April 2, 2020
For sure!

Amy Quarles

April 2, 2020
I think it’s a good idea to make the masks and I love the idea of buy one donate one. With the recent talk of encouraging everyone to wear a mask, but supplies being extremely limited, I wasn’t sure how this would be implemented. But if companies can step up to make the masks, use will be more widespread

Julia

April 2, 2020
I am a nursing student and healthcare worker at two major hospitals in a large city in the US.

Linda Saunders

April 2, 2020
Yes of course you should make these. The Gov Newsom of California is going to require the general public to wear homemade masks when out in public. This is a no brainer. Go for it!

Yes, make masks!

Nicole

Yes, please. I'll order one. I want to be helpful by not spreading potentially infectious droplets, and I want this company to do well.

Charlotte A Berringer

April 1, 2020
I am public health official in PA and recently had this topic researched as part of our COVID-19 operations.

Brigid Cahalan

April 1, 2020
Yes I would. Love the idea.
I wish you success and health.

Jaired Hoium

April 1, 2020
OMG, yes! Can I order right now?!

Elizabeth Rucker

April 1, 2020
Yes! in principle I would definitely support a project like this. Frankly, not everyone can make their own masks, and reusable ones are easier on the environment. Even if you did not provide masks to the health care system it would still be a worthwhile project, especially as you need to survive too!! If this doesn't work for your bottom line to give half of them to health care I would still support it, if you find you can do that, they I would even want to see you ask for donations to support what you are doing. If I bought a mask from you, I wouldn't just wnat to konw you would make another mask to go to a health care facility, I'd want to have the chance to make a donation and be able to provide them to people in need. I have been thinking about making my own - ones with animal faces so that they are fun for children, and not so spooky looking. I thought turtle face would work really well. but dogs and cats will likely be super popular. The other thought I would have regards your shipping and delivery, that the people who provide that service be given good working conditions. Even that unto itself is a huge step for businesses to make now. So I undestand if you can't act like a traditional charity, but make sure that your people are well taken care of and given safe working conditions, or the delivery services that do your deliveries for you. Amazon, for example, is just, to me a horrible system, and I'm not sure what other routes are available for organizations who ship their goods. Those are my thoughts! Best of luck with your efforts!

Jenny

April 1, 2020
Yes, please make multiple sizes so they will fit properly

Mel GIrard

April 1, 2020
Yes, please do this! I would by some for myself, my son, and my sister. And importantly, our first responders need the N95 masks so make these for the rest of us to wear instead. Thank you for being open to this possibility. And it will provide your team with some income since they may be considered “essential services”. But please be safe and well.

Judith

April 1, 2020
Abso-posit-utely. I will buy for certain. Don’t wait on the public. Do it because it’s the right thing to do for those who are working and suffering. The reward will come back to you many times over.

Linda Adams

April 1, 2020
YES!! Make the masks. I appreciate all the comments above mine. I'm making some also, along with friends in my quilt guild, plus thre are neighborhood groups (working at their own homes). I was interested in using some kind of filter (I finally chose meltblown nonwoven fabric) to slip inside each mask that's been made with a pocket. So go for it! I will order some from you, also. Thank you for helping our communities!

Smart, efficient and helpful: buy one get one masks out of a project that fell through? It's a win/win. Sign me up for four to keep and a dozen to give away.

Peter Jack

April 1, 2020
People should know that cotton fabric masks will not filter particles as small a viruses. However they may prevent large droplets of bodily fluids that may contain viruses or other germs from escaping via the nose and mouth. They also protect against splashes and sprays from other people, such as those from sneezes and coughs. Also, cotton masks worn over the face are unable to protect you from getting airborne virus particles, from a cough or sneeze, into your eyes.

That being said, I think you should make the masks if you have the material, to help contribute to the community. If people are buying cotton masks, they might leave the medical grade masks for the health care workers who need them

Yes, make them and we will buy them. My friend is making them and they can cover an N95 mask to keep it clean. Then the outside cover mask can be washed over and over again. China has less cases because they acted right away and people survived because of masks and lockdowns. Let's do everything we can to control this outbreak and let the health care workers have the other masks they need to stay safe and continue the working they are doing.

I think science is with you on this one. Asian populations have always worn face masks to protect themselves from germs, both bacterial or viral. I fully support this! I've made a few myself already but would definitely buy for the "buy one, give one" model.

Here is a great (but kind of tedious, so stick with it) video about masks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoDwXwZXsDI&t=29s . . . My friends and I have been making masks for firefighters and hospital personnel. Here are the dimensions and instructions per the hospitals’ request:

The dimensions per mask are 8 3/4 wide and 7 1/2 inches high. Here is the link to their pattern:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoDwXwZXsDI&t=29s

FYI: very important: workers DON'T LIKE elastic and prefer fabric ties (bias binding). If you do make masks, leave a slot as in the video for a metal nose-shaper or insert a pipe cleaner or other similar metal wire. Also, if they're going to a hospital, leave a slot so that personnel can insert a nonwoven, waterproof layer. For firefighters, funeral home workers, vets, etc., I use three layers of fabric. Remember, the fabric must be tightly woven - not so thin that when you hold it up to the light you can see through it.

I understand the desire to make sure our first responders have the masks they need but I think it makes sense for everyone to wear a mask when they are out among people and stuff people touch these days. Every bit helps. I have been wearing a buff but would buy a mask from you. Love your store.

I am a military dependent living overseas in Japan. Everyone here wears masks, mostly daily, without any social stigma. The rate of transmission in Japan is very low partially because of this cultural practice. I would LOVE to see the US on board with this, and I think your strategy of Buy One Donate One is the best way to survive and give back at the same time. Thank you for the positive impact you have on society and good luck with this transition!!

Jonathan C Fryer

April 1, 2020
Absolutely, make them. I just got laid off and I'm still willing to buy these if you make them. We as a continental community need these. If an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, I'll take a pound of prevention to share in my neighborhood.

Yes, make the face masks. I’ve been making them myself at home, not for nurses but for myself and my family and friends, and for the people working in businesses still open to the public, like grocery stores. If we all wear them no one will feel weird, and we’re going to need lots! Apparently research shows they make a difference.

April 1, 2020
What a great idea. I would fully support it, and would buy masks for my family, up to 8 of us. The organic cotton would be perfect. And patterned would be best, so that they don't look like surgical masks which should be kept for front line workers. And if this initiative means you can continue to keep staff employed, so much the better!

Cindy Young

April 1, 2020
Yes, yes, yes! I would order a bunch if you make them and would also probably donate a majority of those to my RN buddies on the front lines. I'm thinking soon we will all be wearing masks when out of our homes so these would be so beneficial. When do you think you could get this up and running?

Lindsay

Without question, I will purchase masks from you if you make them. I’d be especially eager if you make them in solid colors that don’t look medical or whimsical. I know it’s antithetical to philosophically important western cultural aesthetic, but these could easily just become thought of as an accessory for going out. And at this point I can imagine worse dystopian tropes coming to life if we don’t find a way to cope with our fear of contagion.

mary ryan

April 1, 2020
I will be happy to have

Marcie

April 1, 2020
Yes. I would buy one and would love to see one get donated. I appreciate your (intended) transparency and I hope you can keep it affordable

DeAnn

April 1, 2020
Yes - I would take part in bogo offer Good idea!

Stacey Champion

April 1, 2020
YES!!! I also have a (pro bono) client here in Phoenix, Justa Center, who solely serves homeless seniors (as well as those who've finally been housed) and I know many of the workers and seniors totally need masks! Yes, yes, yes!

Mary Sellers

April 1, 2020
I am definitely on board with this project. When can I place an order?

Karen

April 1, 2020
Yes please! Let us know!

Marcy

April 1, 2020
Yes. I would get them for me and family members. Need the soon!!!

Sonia Urbom

April 1, 2020
Yes, please use your cotton to make masks. We will need them for the future waves of COVID-19 and/or other viruses. I would order at least 5 and would be willing to pay more for you to produce masks for donations to those who need them.

GRAMMA

April 1, 2020
Absolutely! One small step at a time !

Barbara Dworak

April 1, 2020
Yes, of course. Let us know.

Susan

April 1, 2020
Yes, I especially like your "buy one donate one" idea.

Bambi Anderson

April 1, 2020
I think it's a great idea, and to extend that further, here in LA California, there are a slew of homeless people out on the streets who could use masks out there. Same in NY, and all across the country..service workers who can't get masks....I say go for it!

CPSink

April 1, 2020
I would definitely support the idea. I’m a healthcare professional. Even if the cotton masks only stop 50% of droplets, that’s 50% that are NOT getting through. I’m sure that there are lots of workers who could use them. Folks in Grocery Stores for example. People who need to go into homes to do repairs. Save the higher level products for the healthcare workers who really need them.

Cheryl Boerger

April 1, 2020
Yes. I think it is a great idea. I am down for buying some for friends and family as well. So get crankin!!!!!!! :-) Thank you

Please do it would be so helpful 💚❤️💖

JEnny

April 1, 2020
Great idea. I’m in . Count on me to order!

Te Smith

April 1, 2020
Absolutely. I would buy several, for myself and for some of my older neighbors. The masks protect others. If we all wear them when outside, then we are all protecting each other. Saw a great video from the Czech Republic last night. Evidently, everyone there is wearing masks as well as washing their hands and practicing social distancing. The message re: the masks? 'I'll protect you. You protect me.' WOW! When can I order the????? Thank you!

Carol Coffelt

April 1, 2020
I have read only a few responses... but I agree that if you made the masks I would buy them. I'm not sure which research to believe, but you have a wonderful product line and business that I support. I have already seen too many companies and friends of mine suffer because of all the shutdowns. But that's not the only reason to buy from you. You would be sure to make a quality product, while protecting the environment and providing an essential commodity. You are thinking outside the box to not only keep your company going but to help the people that really need it. I say, go for it!! :D I'd buy and support the buy one donate one option!!

Foxey Mccleary

April 1, 2020
Please do. Would appreciate email heads up when they are ready. Thanks ever so: Foxey

Terri

April 1, 2020
I think it's a wonderful idea. I will support.

T R

April 1, 2020
I think its a very good idea and would support it....but the masks have to be constructed to the medical specs that will make them effective..otherwise, what's the point..

Holly

April 1, 2020
Please. Yes.

BRITTANY

April 1, 2020
Go for it! You’d be filling a definite need

LInda Tarney

April 1, 2020
I think this is a fantastic idea and a win win investment. You will help stop the prevention of Covid-19 while helping your business to stay afloat.

Wendy

April 1, 2020
I think it is a great idea.

Aleta Karstad

April 1, 2020
Make them! I'll order some! How about a hepafilter insert for people who need extra protection due to being immunocompromised?

Also, I've just painted a smiley face on mine, a red heart where the tip of my nose would be, and a big bold capital U where my mouth would be - read from top to bottom, "Love You" in the language of symbols. Perhaps you could make some of those as well as print patterns.

Becca

April 1, 2020
sounds like a great plan! I love this "buy one, give one". Can hospitals use something like this?

Wendi Bien

April 1, 2020
Great idea! Really stepping up in this time of need. I would support it.

Jean Pessolano

April 1, 2020
This is a great idea I’m all for it

Florence

April 1, 2020
Yes, I think cloth masks are the alternative for people who are not sick, and not medical workers, or exposed to a lot of people like people working in stores.

JR

April 1, 2020
Hello ~ Unless the masks not only have the cotton layers but also layers of non-woven materials inside it will not prevent the virus from getting through. They also need to be snug on the face with some type of nose clip to make it is snug there as well. I would love to purchase them and donate them but only if they are going to be sufficient, otherwise it is a waste of good materials and time.

Rachel Edwards

April 1, 2020
Make them! I’ll buy! You keep your workers working! Go to FB Coronavirus Center that is a central location for needs!! This will release masks that are PPE specific for hospital worker, ER . Firemen , etc.

cheri roshon

April 1, 2020
Absolutely do it! Let us know the costs and get started. This is not going to go away for awhile. God Bless you for thinking about others, while keeping your business afloat.

LEslue

April 1, 2020
Yes by all means make masks. This virus will be around a long time, with ebbs and flows until a vaccine in created and people around the world are inoculated. I would definitely support the buy one give one.

MAmadoc

April 1, 2020
Another thought is that doctors are recommending covid 19 positive people to wear masks at home with their loved ones. However, due to PPE shortage, masks are likely not available for these patients to use at home. These might provide some barrier, as long as it doesn’t give people false security and they lapse in hand washing.

Pame Bond

April 1, 2020
I think its a great idea, esp if you research the best style. I just saw an article where some experts said if you're going to do it, make this particular kind. It seems like they offer some minimal protection but might be a good idea in stores and closed spaces.

keri shaw

April 1, 2020
Yes! Happy to order and love the 1:1 idea.

Susan Garrity

April 1, 2020
I would buy one (and donate one) as you describe. We don’t know what situation we’ll be in tomorrow, so having a little protection is better than no mask at all. We may not know that we are carrying the virus for the first few days too.

Mamadoc

April 1, 2020
I think it’s a good idea. Agree that the data is conflicting. Masks need to be used in conjunction with good hand washing and not touching one’s face. These might be useful to protect others in the case that wearer is ill or to protect the wearer from actually directly touching their face. It’s important that they fit well so that the wearer does not need to readjust when out in public. I think that these would be for the general public, not health care workers.

deb kalmakav

April 1, 2020
with 2 hair ties for ear holds and a regular cotton bandana, you can make a mask with room for a filter but who has those?? i have directions..how to send?

Allan S Bufferd

April 1, 2020
GO! GO! GO........................

Terrific Idea.

Not so easy to find masks as a member of the general public. I applaud you idea in helping the general public and the needs of the professionals.

Ready to support your initiative.

Household is comprised of two post 80 individuals and see this participatory model serving many as the right approach.

Let us know when you will take orders!

Lynda Parkhurst

April 1, 2020
I think it would be a godsend. Great idea.

Estelle H

April 1, 2020
Yes, I'll buy these for my family! Masks for them, masks for other who need it. Win-win!

Jewell Cartales

April 1, 2020
Yes. Would love you to make mask, but it would be awesome if they had some type of viral filter.

Ninon

April 1, 2020
Steve - I think this is a great idea! Thank you and your team for forward thinking. We will get through this together!

CM

April 1, 2020
Follow federal direction - if cloth masks are going to be recommended for the general population - to keep the higher tech ones with emergency workers. If so, yes, make them! I'll buy some for my family and donate the same amount - especially if you can get them to refugee areas where the virus will kill without it being documented very well (partner with Doctors without Borders? MSF or the Red Cross? )

Jody Deal

April 1, 2020
Yes absolutely! Please make masks is you have the ability to do so.

Maggie Taylor

April 1, 2020
Yes, make them. Lots of people with underlying conditions could use them and that would free up the more masks for first responders.

Allison Geist

April 1, 2020
Yes I think this is a great initiative. I am kinda in line with the thinking of them being a useful tool during these times even if its not a perfect solution. That little extra layer of protection combined with social distancing, may help us stay even a little more safe when we need to venture out to the stores for necessities. The frontline workers need the medical grade protection that the government hopes to provide. This initiative may help us that continue to isolate at home, support the community and your business through this challenging time.

sarah

April 1, 2020
Great idea, if cloth masks really are effective. Have some of your vendors sew them, or provide all of us with a sewing pattern and I bet a lot of your customers would be glad to volunteer to make them. We'd need assistance to know where they should be shipped to...

Sarah Berto

April 1, 2020
Great idea!!! I definitely think you should make them, however make sure that they fit snugly around the nose and mouth with no gaps. Of course I will buy a few to support those who cannot afford

Yes! Please make masks for the public so they stop using masks desperately needed by our frontline health care workers.

Chuck Ijadi

April 1, 2020
Yes I’d take 3

Steve Johs

April 1, 2020
I am trauma surgeon in Colorado. I would be unable to use them in the hospital, but they do appear nicely made and I would buy some to wear outdoors in low exposure environments or as a cover mask over an N95.

Courtney

April 1, 2020
Yes yes yes! I need 1 large-sized adult, 1 medium/small sized adult, and 2 children’s masks please. I would definitely buy.

M Calvert

April 1, 2020
I think it is a great idea :) way to repurpose your fabric and adapt to what is happening globally.

Jodi

April 1, 2020
I’m interested in buying a few if the donate one is part of it.

Carrie Sparrevohn

April 1, 2020
Yes you should make them! The government has only held off making the recommendation to wear them because there aren’t enough. I’ll buy 10 if you do!

JF

April 1, 2020
Good Idea! And THANK YOU! I think that you should make as many as you can, using established protocol and charge only what is required to keep employees paid and a tiny mark-up so you can donate 10% of everything they make to help the homeless who are particularly vulnerable.

JEN

April 1, 2020
I would definitely support this.

Annie Tate

April 1, 2020
If you made them, I'd buy one as soon as I could.

Jean SMith

April 1, 2020
I think this is a great idea. I would participate in this project.

Megan Reid

April 1, 2020
Unfortunately they are not approved by my hospital just yet so i wouldnt buy any. however, i think any effort is appreciated.

Judy Curran

April 1, 2020
Yes definitely ! How soon can you do it?

Gail

April 1, 2020
YES! But do some research on the pattern you'll use. I'm told that some are more comfortable than others. Look at the ones that Christian Siriano is making. :)

I'd like washable cloth ones that have a side opening so I can slip in a vacuum cleaner HEPA filter!!! The ones that I use in my Miele vacuum are about 3x7 inches.

Ignore that idiot who accused you of a PR campaign ! What a vile person. But that said, I'd like them to be without a logo/label.

LYnn

April 1, 2020
Yes. I would buy some for my husband and I so we could wash and wear them over and over. and would be happy to donate some.

Barbara Shearer

April 1, 2020
You could also mail supplies to people who sew (I do and have several friends who do as well), and we would PAY for them as a donation to the cause.

But, I'm in favor of your original proposal - that you make to sell them and also to give them away. (I hope that's what your plan is. It wasn't too clear in your paragraphs above.).

Thanks for being pro-active and good stewards of our resources and good citizens of our country.

Sandy Rawe

April 1, 2020
In addition to stopping spray, masks keep us from touching our faces and risking transmission that way. Masks serve several purposes, even light ones work in some ways. Some reminder is better than none. I used a thin folded cotton square with some hair wraps to make a pocket-available mask that is easy to wash and fold flat for storage.

Paula

April 1, 2020
I think it would be a good idea for you to make masks. This seems to align with your companies philosophy. I would support this with purchasing some.

Matthew Pavelich

April 1, 2020
Do it! I’m ready to order.

Kalani Chong

April 1, 2020
Yes, make masks. Healthcare worker here. Anything is better than nothing.

ISabelle

April 1, 2020
Yes I would buy and donate. I did this already with Reformation who are doing the same thing

Teresa Benosky

April 1, 2020
I would definitely support this. I would purchase a bunch so I could give to my coworkers as I am a pharmacist and we see sick people every day. I am happy that you Canadians don’t have the handicap of incompetent leadership to add additional burdens to your population.

Carolyn

April 1, 2020
I would definitely buy them for my husband and me (and possibly other family members). We would want enough to be able to hand or machine wash them after each trip outside the house. Regular soap is enough to clean them and viruses don't live very well on fabric anyway. Thanks for the idea.

Ruth Sandlin

April 1, 2020
I think it is a good idea.

Elizabeth Schnoll

April 1, 2020
If these are available in large quantities and you have that production capability then thus sounds like a wonderful idea! I see and have started to make masks to GIVE to my family and neighbors and anyone who would like one! Thank you for your generous and conscientious willingness to be part of the solution! ❤️🙋🏼‍♀️

Elke

April 1, 2020
I would buy and wear them if you made them!!! I have struggled to find something cloth I like to use to help with allergies every spring and fall and this could actually benefit me medically while not stressing the medical communities supplies!
Please keep us informed!

Sylvie

April 1, 2020
Yes please!

KJgmgmaU

April 1, 2020
People are literally going to be dying in the tens of thousands and you're asking people if you should start a buy-1-donate-1 campaign? How about make them so people don't die and to give the medical workers of America what they need to save lives. Incredibly insensitive and clueless PR campaign.

Naomi Theisz

April 1, 2020
If you send me some of the cotton with mask directions I will be happy to ake so e. I have lots of time on my hands.

Carmina

April 1, 2020
I'd buy & donate.

Elspeth Woods

April 1, 2020
Great idea, they might be needed for quite a while. Being able to wash them will be almost necessary.

Elena Lange

April 1, 2020
I work in a hospital and our doctors are sharing the research on this. And it is very clear actually. Everyone should be wearing masks. Yes, N95s are the best, but fabric ones still give you 60-70% protection. Anything is better than nothing. During the 1918 flu pandemic, it was ordered that everyone wear masks; there are old photos of police wearing them! So yes, please make them!

Ruth

April 1, 2020
Yes, I would definitely buy some. I'm a health care provider (nurse) and I hate seeing this presented as a competition for scarce resources between health care workers and the general population. We want to see transmission rates go down – among everyone – and cloth masks seem like a good way to provide some protection for those in lower risk environments, e.g. grocery shopping vs. working in an ER. Given recent reports that as many as 25% of people carrying the virus can be not showing symptoms, wearing a mask is as much about me protecting you as protecting myself. In an environment where people can be practicing good social distancing and HAND HYGIENE, cloth masks can be an additional protection. In a hospital/healthcare environment where there can be no real social distancing (just vigorous hygiene and infection control) it makes sense to use a higher standard of protective gear. And yes, I’ve been told at work that cloth masks can prolong the usable lifespan of N95 masks – so I’m all for making and providing more well made, well designed cloth masks!

Katie

April 1, 2020
I would support this.

Dave McLean

April 1, 2020
Yes!!!!!!!

Patricia BUrns

April 1, 2020
I would absolutely by them. In fact I want at least 3!

thumbs up!

LInda Biggers

April 1, 2020
Making masks is a great idea! Go for it!

Elizabeth

April 1, 2020
If you can do it without endangering yourselves then, yes. I’m sure they would help. I would buy if you donate as well. Thanks for trying to help. Take good care.

Susan Griffin

April 1, 2020
According to my Doctor who practices Functional Medicine, everyone should be wearing a mask when they leave their home. Yes, please start making them.

Theresa

April 1, 2020
Been making them as a guild project, our hospitals don’t want them so giving to friends and family. Sure , make them, many others can use them.
Tightly woven fabric is best.

zubaiya khan

April 1, 2020
Yes I would support such an incentive, I think the Chinese may have gotten it right by wearing mask, they seem to be controlling the spread of the virus

alexander bingham

April 1, 2020
Go for it! great idea!

Lynn

April 1, 2020
Yes, I think it is an excellent idea to make masks from your organic cotton stash. I would be interested in the buy-one, donate-one offer. Thanks.

Terri Copeland

April 1, 2020
I’ve been making masks from cotton material that I’ve accumulated for quilts, however, obtaining the woven elastic banding and non woven innerfacing has become impossible! Boise Idaho

IAN OSSHER

April 1, 2020
Great idea, less chance of inadvertantly infecting others!

CIndh

April 1, 2020
If they even may remotely help, make them. They are in such demand!

Laura

April 1, 2020
It sounds like a great concept... I didn't see how much you planned to charge. I am at home and making masks. Initially I was making them for the health care workers in our area who were using them over the N95 and surgical masks to prolong the life of those masks. But as soon as I started, my family and friends requested their own masks... so for now I am fulfilling those family and friend requests. You do it! It is a great benefit to us all at this time.
Much Love,
Laura

Kim Todd

April 1, 2020
As long as you are also donating a matched number, I would buy them.

Joanne

April 1, 2020
I am a nurse & appreciate the efforts people are going to keep the necessary equipment avail for front line workers .
And YES made the 2 sides different collars or a way to differentiate which side has been worn to our faces ! Wouldn’t want to flip a contaminated mask
Thanks

Michelle

April 1, 2020
Anything is better than nothing. If your team has adequate protection, and you've got the materials and equipment to make some version of masks, I say 'Yes'!

linda howard

April 1, 2020
I'm coming around to embracing the notion that masks can't hurt and with the new information that a lot of us may carry the virus and have no symptoms they may indeed be a good measure. So yes,I would buy some.

Cynthia Engel

April 1, 2020
Great idea, but do make them to "code".

Brandy

April 1, 2020
Yes! Please make masks! I am a physical therapist and our clinic ran out of masks two weeks ago! Our local church and quilting groups just donated to us and all local hospital workers and those working the drive through testing centers! They are saving our lives and helping to slow the spread!Yes! Make as many masks as possible and donate to local workers!

Yes, good idea! Help us and help your people and the Community! No brainer👍🏼

Joyce Schoonover

April 1, 2020
I believe for us when going about our business would be good. Not for health care workers. Also they have to be made in a sterile environment. We don’t know if a worker comes down with the virus next week. I am a home sewer and have lots of fabric. I have resisted making any. I don’t feel comfortable that it is safe, in many ways. I will make baby stuff and when all clear steam them and give them to babies in need. Just my thoughts

Cher KIltoff

April 1, 2020
Make masks but make sure they make them correctly. Thousands are making masks from YouTube directions but I have only seen a couple that will really protect from Coronavirus!

Michelle Bates

April 1, 2020
Lovely idea.

Victoria Anakalea

April 1, 2020
Yes please do it!

Lyn Liston

April 1, 2020
I would support this. Sounds like a great idea.

Emma Aragon

April 1, 2020
I support the idea. We need to help each other. I don’t have the tools to make a good mask, so this is a good option.

Alexander

April 1, 2020
YES! Please make the masks! Our supply in the healthcare community is very low. I also feel that all of us, at this point, should be wearing masks anytime we have to go out grocery shopping or for other essential errands. This is a great idea that you guys should definitely do!

Skylar

April 1, 2020
Go for it! One thing I’ve read nurses say it would be very helpful if each side is a different color to quickly identify which side has been exposed.

Eve

April 1, 2020
Definitely think you should make them. I think masks will become the new normal as they are in Asia.

William Kadish

April 1, 2020
Sounds like a great idea. We are fans of the “buy one-donate one” approach. Go for it!

Vicky Peck

April 1, 2020

Great idea!

Anna

April 1, 2020
You bet! Excellent!

Bonita

April 1, 2020
Do it. I have a feeling that it won't be long before it is suggested that we wear them. The online patterns are expensive.

Ann

April 1, 2020
They are not as effective as n95 masks, but when someone wears them they are more aware to not touch their face. For that reason I feel that they can be helpful.

Yes, please do it!

April 1, 2020
I support this effort! Would buy them if they were available. Thx!

Terryl

April 1, 2020
I am still on the fence on this one. As a retired healthcare worker I understand the concept of a mask but if not used properly are ,not in my opinion very effective. If everyone is washing their hands with soap before putting the mask on and then washing again after taking it off and keep their hands away from their face it might me some protection. But what do you do with it when you get home if it is contaminated. Usually the mask would be disposed off not kept. Sorry if this is long winded but I can see people wanting to feel protected and the choice is a personal one. Stay safe everyone wishing everyone good health.

Heather Tausig

April 1, 2020
absolutely
Please do ASAP! Thx

Dina Davidson

April 1, 2020
I think cloth masks for the general, non-health-care population are a great idea as long as continued vigorous hand hygiene is observed, social distancing remains in place, and we continue to try very hard not to touch our faces.

Debbie Hollyer

April 1, 2020
Yes would support. Keep the news coming. Great contribution. I thought perhaps you were going to make kits available for personal sewing and use. Maybe another idea eh?

Tracy

April 1, 2020
I surely support what you are doing. I love your products and would be honored tower one of your masks.

Daniel Jarvis

April 1, 2020
I would definitely support this.

TM

April 1, 2020
It's a great idea!

Connie

April 1, 2020
Yes, do it! I am making masks from my own fabric stash...my sister works for the veterans home here in Colorado, they aren’t front line but want to protect their vet residents! So I’m sewing for them along with others I was able to get on board to help!

Lois Kelly

April 1, 2020
I think this is a great idea and would allow the general public access to a mask that could be protective to self and prevent spread to others. I personally would buy some. If we look at the Worldometer (see link below), it is apparent that China did something that worked and kept the rate of infection contained more so than the USA, whose cases are more than double. Everything we can do to prevent spread is worthwhile and could save someone's life. https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/?fbclid=IwAR3f_Py9LCokyvDeAN4_SmdCwrydYqjkRPXr91Skfon1dpGG48bqpGqJ-T8

Carole Oser

April 1, 2020
I am a physical therapist. I think the N95 masks should go to the healthcare professionals. I have taken to using regular masks when out and about but that does not make be feel I don't need other precautions. They don't protect us from everything but I still think they are valuable in slowing the spread.

Wanda

April 1, 2020
I'm all for helping business say afloat, but I do not think we need to be wearing masks, and I won't wear one unless I am charged a penalty for not wearing one. Virus droplets can congregate on the masks and when you fiddle with your face or take it on and off you could spread the virus on yourself and others. Also, if it is important to wear a mask then it needs to cover your eyes as that is also an opening for a virus to get inside your body. I think the solution is to open businesses again. Honestly, many doctors and scientists who aren't affiliated with the government believe this is way overblown and that a number of them are reporting death certificates changed to coronavirus when in fact it was something else--even suicide. And the so-called coronavirus cases are based on faulty testing and can show a false positive if the person received a flu vaccine. We need to get smarter and look for the hidden agenda.

Francesca M Austin

April 1, 2020
I would support but it depends on the price. I am making masks at home and giving to those who can’t make them.

Leezee Porter

April 1, 2020
It falls under your mission statement to be helpful to others in as healthy a way as possible. I would definately support that.

Elisabeth Carpenter

April 1, 2020
Yes!! I absolutely think it's a great idea, and I agree that everyone should wear masks, at least for now, for the protection of all! Cotton masks would be infinitely more interesting, and more comfortable than the generic single-use kind that most people are having to re-use. One tip from nurses: make the inside and outside different colors/prints so medical workers can easily see which side is which

I’m 81 on fixed income. So I need at least a ballpark price before I commit. Thanks for considering this!

MAry FAlco

April 1, 2020
I think it’s a great idea! Count me in!

Elisabeth Wright

April 1, 2020
Yes, I would absolutely support this idea.

Judith Gough

April 1, 2020
Yes! I would gladly buy and donate

Carol Deegan

April 1, 2020
I definitely would support that. Would someone be able to request a donation be made to their hospital?

Jordana

April 1, 2020
As a cancer patient, I would definitely buy

Debbie

April 1, 2020
By all means, Do it!! I'll support it. I think we will soon see a position change by the CDC on this. We know that people can be asymptomatic carriers, so it would be helpful if they would be wearing a mask. We also know that up to 80% of infected people show mild to moderate symptoms, and sometimes, none at all! I also think it would be good to see a cultural shift in the US to use them as a general rule, out of courtesy to others, even if you 'only' have a cold. I'm a surgical nurse and I intend to be wearing a mask as soon as I get out of quarantine, but I won't take them from my fellow nurses on the front line fighting this horrendous disease. So, cloth it is. If you make them and I buy them, I can help support you as well! It's a Win-Win! Thank you for thinking of it.

Júlia

April 1, 2020
Yes please!

Eve Foist

April 1, 2020
Excellent idea to buy1 and donate 1. And because they are pretty and not hospital grade, there is no reason to feel uncomfortable about wearing one. We need every layer of protection for ourselves, but especially for others that could become infected.

Pat Sacca

April 1, 2020
When I looked into sewing these, I found that Some hospitals wouldn’t be able to use them and it might be difficult finding a place to even donate them. Now, if Americans do start to use for personal use when food shopping, for example, your company supplying them could be helpful. As you mentioned, this is still a developing issue in our country.

Liz FEingold

April 1, 2020
Great idea!!!! Would definitely buy!!!

Debra Ramage

April 1, 2020
I would buy several. I would give them as gifts and have one or two for myself.

April 1, 2020
I think it is a great idea. Count me in!

April 1, 2020
Absolutely! I would buy some as soon as they are ready! If nothing else it helps you not touch your face!

Angela Aleman

April 1, 2020
Yes definitely

Margaret Tomlinson

April 1, 2020
Yes. I've been making masks out of my scrap cotton and linen. I think we should all be wearing them, and the jauntier colors and patterns feel happy and friendly, which is something we all need right now.

Don R. McManus

April 1, 2020
Absolutely!! I'd definitely buy and donate.

Sharon Brooks

April 1, 2020
I support this idea!

Lisa

April 1, 2020
For sure. I'm pretty certain that we are going to need them.

Jeanie

April 1, 2020
Sounds like a worthwhile project.

Linda

April 1, 2020
Yes. If people had a cloth re-usable mask they might remember not to touch their faces and also that would leave the medical grade masks for the professionals to use. I am staying home because I am asthmatic so I only need something to cover my face when I run across to the store for essentials. This would fill that need, protecting me and others.

Jonathan Latimer

April 1, 2020
Absolutely. The guidance in Brooklyn is that everyone should wear a facemask to super markets. I will buy to support your efforts. Love the idea of buy one/donate one.

Kathleen Morgen

April 1, 2020
Absolutely!

Mel

April 1, 2020
Yes, I believe it can help!

Mary English

April 1, 2020

Scott Turner

April 1, 2020
I’d buy some too

SUzanne

April 1, 2020
Sure thing

Jenna

April 1, 2020
Great idea! Many of us (myself included) have already made masks for ourselves and to donate to local hospitals, so I wouldn’t be purchasing fir myself. But not all ate sewers

Zorayda Cocchi

April 1, 2020
Yes, making masks double sided so you can use it a few times (you want to identify which side was towards your face when putting it on and off several times during the day) before washing it. Selling them in packs of 2 or 4.

Eileen

April 1, 2020
Yes, this is a good plan. Definitely, will purchase for myself and family. Wonderful that in these uncertain times you are thinking of how to help others. Thank you.

Jean Rosenberg

April 1, 2020
I would order 6 for us at a fair price with the donations factored in

Kori Lester

April 1, 2020

Susan Higgins

April 1, 2020
By all means make them. I sew a lot and am making some for all my family.

JAmie

April 1, 2020
Family physician. Yes! Donate to nursing homes, homeless shelters, jails and retirement communities as well. These are high risk communities that may be low priority.

Mazell

April 1, 2020
Maybe we should have holding boxes for our deliveries. Virus lives on cardboard for 24 hours and 2-3 days on plastic!!!! We are not allowed to bring our cloth bags into the grocery store but the plastic bags could be worse!!

Cass

April 1, 2020
Great idea!

Caroline

April 1, 2020
Good idea but one donate one. Would buy. Need to decide fast.

Serena

April 1, 2020
I would support this endeavor and very much like the idea of buy one/donate one or even a straight donation to health care facilities that are in need. The reason I haven’t bought any masks is that the CDC has discouraged it, and (more importantly) I don’t want to take needed supplies away from neither health care workers nor vulnerable populations.

Evelyn

April 1, 2020
Great idea - we all should be wearing them. The US Gov't has been too slow to move on everything.

Brittany B

April 1, 2020
Yes, please make! Everyone should wear a mask when they go out for the foreseeable future. And offering to donate one for each purchase is extra awesome. We support this endeavor. Please do it!!!

LL

April 1, 2020
Yes! Happy to contribute.

ELD

April 1, 2020
I have been making masks for my friends and family for a week and I am sending them out. My BFF is a trauma doctor. These masks can be worn by people not interacting with covid 19 patients. They can be worn when going out to get groceries or to the post office etc. they can be work by other professionals that are only being given 1 N95 mask per week and are getting mask 😷 burn. Stay home if you have to go out wear a mask, bring it home and wash it. Make sure the material
You are using is preshrunk.

Sarah

April 1, 2020
I would be interested! Love the buy one, donate one concept!

Karen Bunning

April 1, 2020
Go for it... I would buy. I think it would be wise to do a prepaid system. That way you are not wasting material on hopefully a short term need.

Gundi D

April 1, 2020
GO!!!

Juliet Sampson

April 1, 2020
Count me in. Multi-packs are best.

Peggy Coronado

April 1, 2020
Yes definitely make them, I would purchase them.

Lucinde Metcalfe

April 1, 2020
Yes, please, do go ahead with this asap! I am struggling just to get one made, and as both my husband and I are in more than one high-risk category we would be so grateful to have masks to use, to keep ourselves and others safer. I think multi-packs are good, to allow for washing, and I would definitely support buy one donate one for those in need of them. Thank you!

Betsy Ling

April 1, 2020
Yes, everything helps

E Anzinger

April 1, 2020
I would purchase.

Sue Fischer

April 1, 2020
Yes, make them! Great idea to donate some as well. I will support this and will order ASAP.

Mick Wilson

April 1, 2020
Absolutely. And I will work to get them up north where isolated and indigenous communities have a real need.

Cathy Hanson

April 1, 2020
Make them, maybe sell them in packs of two so you have a clean one while the other is in the wash.

Carla Ghisalberti

April 1, 2020
Yes! It stimulates community work and sharing. It’s important to keep your, your collaborators and our spirits up.

Carolyn

April 1, 2020
I'm in--happy to buy one for me, family members, etc, and donate one for each of those masks! Great idea. If possible, please offer some masks with ties rather than earloops--more customizable for a small face.

Christine Shipley

April 1, 2020
definitely, I'm in.

Joan Walker

April 1, 2020
I think its a great idea. Could I order 2 right now?

Janet James

April 1, 2020
Yes. I will participate

Betsy A Hester

April 1, 2020
YES!! DO IT!! I'll buy more than one ... so I can donate more. You're the best. Do it now!!!

Laurel

April 1, 2020
As an infection control nurse if you are doing the measures listed above there is no need to have a mask. You use masks for 2 reasons only: if you are sick and need to go for medical care OR if you need to care for a loved one at home who is ill and need to be in closer contact with them. For general use it is not recommended as you can easily contaminate yourself if you do not know how to use them appropriately and it gives a false sense of security to people. While masks protect your mouth and nose somewhat, the eyes are also mucous membranes where the virus can enter. If you are wearing a mask, you should also be wearing full shields/goggles to protect your eyes too. Without full coverage and well fitting items, putting them in and taking them off without contaminating yourself, you are not doing yourself favours. It’s simply a false sense of security. Taking the distancing measures, washing hands and disinfecting surfaces is a much more effective way to manage the average persons exposure.

Jean Patton

April 1, 2020
I love the idea and although I have the material and the know how I would definitely buy from you instead as I have many other projects to do and at my age my body can only work a couple of hours a day. In the general public they are not foolproof but I believe helpful. Doctors and nurses etc need other kinds to protect themselves. These are only good to cover their masks so they can wear them again.

Martha Flack

April 1, 2020
Yes, I would definitely purchase masks. I agree that selling in packs of 3-5, is best to ensure masks are washed after each use. Great idea!

Jennifer Scholefield

April 1, 2020
I absolutely would support this. Just tell me how

PJM

April 1, 2020
Yes! If we had other make available, people might stop hoarding the ones needed in health systems. And given the fact that they are predicting subsequent "waves" of the disease (the the fact that the CDC seems to be changing its mind), I am guessing we will all be wearing masks for months when we are back at work, out and about running errands etc. Yes - and I like your idea of buy one donate one.

Eleni O'Neill

April 1, 2020
Yes, make them! I am making them also but can't make that many as I am also solo parenting and running a household and working from home!

Cathy Driscoll

April 1, 2020
I have already purchased masks from 2 other small businesses. One was offering the buy one, donate one option. I bought 4 from them (& donated all). I purchased 3 from the other company so I could share if needed. Yes, please, make masks & offer “ buy one, donate one“ purchases

Ellie Gillespie

April 1, 2020
Just do it! It can't hurt!

Tracy

April 1, 2020
Make them! Absolutely make them. I'll buy some, and will absolutely support buy-one-donate-some efforts. I would say give people the option to buy/donate and also to add extra donate quantities -- so say I buy one and you donate one, and I can choose to donate more (maybe at the same BOGO price but you donate both). There are lots of good reasons to wear masks. It keeps your spit to yourself, and it also serves as a great reminder not to touch your face. Touching an infected person or surface and then touching your face is the absolutely most common way people pick up any virus!

Carol

April 1, 2020
I agree with "Yes, you definitely should make them and I love the idea of make 1, donate 1". Your design is great! I prefer the masks with the earloops so excellent job on design. You might consider making a double thickness option for purchase, as well.

B Arnot

April 1, 2020
I'm in!

Leslie Wimmer

April 1, 2020
Absolutely a wonderful idea. Would gladly buy these and donate to those in need. My whole family is retired and/or current health care professionals . They need all the protection they can get!

Donna Dunleavy

April 1, 2020
Yes absolutely make masks. I think any protection is better than nothing. I agree with the idea of ties vs elastic ear bands. Thanks for sharing your resources.

Irene

April 1, 2020
Great idea, my neighbors in San Dimas/Glendora are sewing, donating and already selling, buy 2, donate one or buy one, donate one. If you do this, I would recommend different sizes, adult and children; make them in cute prints. Yes, I would be interested but a lot of large companies are already doing this. Brooks Brothers has 800 employees and they are making masks and coverups. getting them approved by government.

Dawn Ross

April 1, 2020
Great idea! I'm in!

Mazell

April 1, 2020
No. Too much information out there telling us that wearing a mask all the time increases humidity in the mask which creates a lovely environment for all bacteria/ viruses. Only if you are confirmed infected or in close proximity to people (which apparently most of us are not by staying home) should you consider a mask and then it should be a full charcoal filter respirator.

ERANIT ELIDAYAN

April 1, 2020
I will purchase this product for sure. just hoping shipping wont take forever

Christina Martens

April 1, 2020
Good idea but remember to clean them after using and not to touch them while they are on , wash or sanitizer your hands and most importantly still practice safe distancing cause these will not protect you fully

Susan Stanhope

April 1, 2020
Absolutely! I wholeheartedly support you making the masks and will definitely purchase them from you once they are available. I assume that they will be washable so that they can be reused. I suggest you consider selling in packages of 3 or 5 per person so that some can be in the wash with others available to wear.

Melissa Baumann

April 1, 2020
I would purchase some and I know my neighbors would as well. I am limiting my social contact as much as possible but I feel straight panicked when I have to go out. I'd also be very very interested in buying wraps. I've never been more conscious of how much waste I'm producing.

Ms. Helen Cook

April 1, 2020
GREAT IDEA! DO IT!

Cher KIltoff

April 1, 2020
I am making masks with 3 interface Pelion linings inside. I have 50 to make for family and friends and I hope to donate 50.

Stephanie Stone

April 1, 2020
As a concerned individual with an overactive mind, a touch of OCD, and germaphobe, I
couldn’t understand why it was even said that masks won’t help people who are not sick. In fact, I tend to believe that if we had been prepared enough and had enough supplies (hospitals first of course) that if both sick individuals and non-sick individuals were wearing masks it would have help prevent the spread even more. I am 100% behind this effort and would support. I especially love the buy one/donate one model. Thumbs up, Etee. Go for it. It can’t hurt and may help save lives.

Susan

April 1, 2020
How about buy soap get 2 masks free. Or spend over $x and get some free.

Patricia A Solberg

April 1, 2020
I would purchase a few, for sure.

Billie Mae Gordon

April 1, 2020
I would definitely support this. One suggestion, though, use ties instead of elastics over the ears. I heard a nurse say that the elastics are not comfortable - ties can be adjusted to fit their faces better. I would definitely buy some of them.

Sandi

April 1, 2020
Have always thought it was a good idea. It makes good common sense.
I would buy one for several of my family members.

June Rogers

April 1, 2020
Yes I will support your mask initiative. It’s like chicken soup. It couldn’t hurt! Please make sure they come in different sizes and are thick enough to help screen out as many molecules as possible. Also have plain ones as well as fancy ones. Some people may be shy and not want to stand out Thanks!

Kristina Kv-L

April 1, 2020

April 1, 2020
I would purchase a few, as I believe we may need to have them on hand for the long haul as COVID-19 will return in waves as the population moves about, lets down its guard, etc.

Gail Stallings

April 1, 2020
Great idea. Also offer straight donations. Please check to see if your fabric will work (looks like it will). 🙏🏻Please.... see if you can coordinate with a local medical facility to upcycle their discarded sterilization fabric (see UF.edu masks below.). Please share this post. There is no reason why our frontline workers cannot have more than adequate face protection when the materials are free and available, or purchased new inexpensively. If you are keeping your distance, wading your hands when you touch things (especially outside your home), keeping your in-person group very small, and not touching your face, masks are not needed for protection—— however, they will keep you and your family from touching your face, and that is a big plus.
Medical Mask patterns

This it the volunteer group coordinating in Gainesville. This page has 2 mask patterns and links to UF and other info.. Other pages show where to sign up or donate materials, labor and funds.

https://gnvcovidmasks.org/how-to-make-masks/

This is a similar pattern for cotton masks with a pocket, so existing PPE material can be inserted and reused later.

https://www.communitymedical.org/CMC/media/coronavirus/How-to-Sew-a-Surgical-Mask-for-Hospitals.pdf

(You can double check with the volunteer group to see if they want pockets. )

This article has more links to more resources for locating those in need to donate
(I’m going to find a way to get more sterilization fabric where it is needed to make PPE.)

I think it's a great idea. The more companies available to help and can pivot their product offerings during these times, the better. We are happy to share your companies info on our company blog and newsletters that reach 20k individuals in the East Bay area of San Francisco. We all love supporting companies that are trying to do good while running a business at the same time! And we would be happy to purchase a whole bug order for our agents and clients! Thank you!!!

I would buy 5 right now. As well, if you make some toddler size I would buy one of those as well.

Why not? I think a mask keeps you from touching your face as well as possibly keeping some bad bugs out.

Please do, anything to help the situation. Not sure if I would buy one right now, but if told to, certainly would, so would be looking for a good source.

Would love to buy one/donate one

Lisa

April 1, 2020
Due to my age, and health problems, I was proactive and got a N99 mask before there was a shortage. I believe that anything you can do to decrease your chances of getting it is better than not trying at all. That being said, why aren't those people just using a bandana? Since we are self-isolating it's only when you go into a grocery store, etc. Maybe instead of making masks, make bandanas that wrap around your ears. Covers more area and double the material. Just a thought.

Samm

April 1, 2020
It’s a very sweet idea. It has been very confusing to know what to do, especially as I live in New York and I’m still going to work. I think people forget about all the people who are working who are not doctors and nurses but still are in quite a bit of danger.

When I first saw the posts about making masks, which I’ve seen for a few weeks now, I was also curious about hospitals but all the reports I’ve seen from hospitals was if they wanted those N95 masks or nothing so that material masks mean nothing to them. That is the feedback I have gotten from healthcare professionals here. And I wish they were working on making those masks so that they were reusable and not used once and trashed but that’s what they’re looking for and that’s why I think they need so many.

In the end I resolved to just wear something over my face, I had a cloth mask from something previously unrelated, and a scarf on top of that, for two basic reasons, to prevent me from touching my face so much which apparently is a big problem, and to prevent me from spreading if I should have it and be unaware.

To give it to people visiting people in hospitals it’s nice but if they’re giving them an N 95 mask then why would they be wearing this on top of it? Maybe I missed something there. Maybe to give to people in nursing homes or in situations like that might be nice, not only to protect themselves and each other (in the ways that I said) but also because your designs look cheerful and lovely. Or people working in supermarkets and places like that. I would be down for helping with that.

Laura

April 1, 2020
I think that this is a great idea...especially if you are willing to donate them to a worthy cause as well. I would support as long as my purchase helps others. It is extremely important that we all contribute to make things better.

Deborah Hollingsworth

April 1, 2020
I would buy 4 right off the bat , not even knowing the price. Greatest idea!!!

Absolutely!!!!!!! We must look at the whole problem and take advice wherever it comes from.

Jacqueline Miller

April 1, 2020
Great idea! I would definitely buy one❤️

Sue Chambers

April 1, 2020
Yes yes yes make face masks they are so needed. Here are two designers I follow who have some good info on their IG they are giving people the option to buy one donate one which I think is awesome. One of them is giving a mask with purchase or you can choose to donate
Also join Face book page for lots of info on Mask making volunteers you will get an idea of the urgency of the situation.
I truly think more and more info will be coming out regarding the Benefits of wearing masks and that will lead people to want to abstain them cloth masks that you can wash and reuse is a wonderful option
Good luck And best

alice Burkart

April 1, 2020
Yes- I think it is a good idea. Someone needs to research how to get them to the people who really need them at the hospitals, but I'll definitely buy one and donate one.

Alex

April 1, 2020
Yes! Please do this! Do you have elastic? That seems to be difficult to source right now. I am in to purchase and donate to local hospital. Thx!

Rhonda

April 1, 2020
As a seasoned RN of over 36 years in healthcare I have been asking myself and wondering what the role was for what are being called “comfort” masks and I am still unsure. I am not sure I would wear them while taking care of a person with Covid 19. However, I was just watching some information about the reality of reuse of N95s and the fact that some are wearing surgical masked over them to extend their wear through a whole shift. I get that now, they may be useful. In the home care setting where I currently work the company is suggesting if the family or caregiver is comfortable and wants them worn then by all means wear the comfort masks.
Keep in mind they will need to be laundered with uniforms by the personal used. I would imagine the laundry facilities in hospital or longterm care facilities will not wash them.
Buy one give one is a fabulous idea if they are given to those that would wear them and benefit from them.

STephanie SWitzer

April 1, 2020
YES DO IT!! Hospitals in the US are literally asking community to do it. They give kits and or instructions online. They would buy from you. Hanes ( think cotton underwear). is doing it in the US. You can give in CA and sell to USA. I work for a large US hospital system...

Google medscape for science of cotton masks
Deaconess in Illinois for video instructions
Phoeby Putney is another hospital giving instructions

Jamie Martindale

April 1, 2020
I love this idea. I currently don't have a need for the masks but I would be willing to donate to the production costs if they were being donated to hospitals etc.

I approve.
Good idea.
I would buy some for me and gifts.

Great idea! I would buy 4 and donate 4! (Whole family! Not that my teenagers will WEAR them, but...)

Please do make them and I love the buy one/donate one concept!

I'm totally for the face masks!!

Sue Mclinden

April 1, 2020
I am 75. Retired Registered Nurse. I totally agree that wearing a mask is a good idea. If it fits right, you don't have to be touching your mask to adjust..I wear a paper one now and put a triple folded paper towel inside it. I would love one of yours

newday_dawning

April 1, 2020
Yes, I would support this effort; it would save me the trouble of having to make some of my own. I am immune compromised, so even after everyone else gets the "all clear" I won't be able to socialize until there is a vaccine and viral treatment. That could be 18-24 months. It would be nice to have some cute masks to wear during that time because once everyone else gets the "all clear" and starts to let down their guard down, they will stop social distancing, which could be fatal to me. :)

Eufemia Campagna

April 1, 2020
YES! Make them! Especially if it means keeping (more of) your staff employed. People are making and using cotton masks REGARDLESS of what is currently recommended, and health care providers are using them IN ADDITION to what they have so I say it's a win-win! BOGO is the best! Maybe even have a list of organizations that would get (or the buyer could select) the free mask. Thank you for using your time, your staff, and your product for the greater good.

Brooke

April 1, 2020
Yes! Let me know when they’re available.

Joy Mijares

April 1, 2020
Make the masks for people to use so medical
grade masks are saved for healthcare and hospital workers. Maybe the current pandemic will be a page turner on mask use in the west.

Naomi Ryan

April 1, 2020
I support the idea of ETEE making masks for the general public. It will help mitigate our unknowingly infecting others. As we now know, someone could be an asymptomatic carrier.

Maris Miles

April 1, 2020
great idea! I would buy

Sara

April 1, 2020
I also would buy if not too expensive!

Susan

April 1, 2020
Please make these masks. Leave the N95s for the first responders and medical professionals, but these will certainly help with preventing disease spread through aerosolized droplets!

April 1, 2020
Makes sense- but one, get one
I will support
Lots will no doubt. Quincy, MA, USA

Josie McLeod

April 1, 2020
Great idea. I would buy one and possibly donate if the price is affordable and in Canadian dollars. I'm sure many would want a few for their family

Definitely a great idea, especially the buy one, donate one concept.

It’s a wonderful idea.
I support

Molly

April 1, 2020
Many communities, including mine, are already doing this through volunteers. That said, I think it's a great idea for you support "the cause" and I will buy one donate one! From what I've read, the consensus seems to be that ordinary cotton masks or bandanas at least keep the droplets down,. I spray the outside of mine with homemade sanitizer (alcohol, vinegar & essential oils) before wearing into a store. Thank you for considering this!

Lori Bartie

April 1, 2020
A number of my family are in the medical field and have already started using cloth masks over their N95 masks. I was already ordering some from a relative before the word came out in the US in about general public using them because I read about another country using masks in public and that it helped in keeping the curve low.
So I'm for it and will support the buy one give one concept with at least an initial order, and possibly more and sharing the info after I receive one.

Sarah B Greenholz

April 1, 2020
Make them as fast as you can! Face masks are being recommended now.

Connie

April 1, 2020
Yes! I think this is a great idea! I love the “buy one, donate one idea.” It will allow us to help our families and know that we are helping others, at the same time. Depending on the price, I will buy several!

CAROL CALDWELL

April 1, 2020
It is arrest idea that I will support with ordering. If these are made with a pocket for a filter material like a coffee filter, vacuum cleaner bag, etc. that is disposable it will be effective enough for use by the general public. Let me know when you start production!

Sherri

April 1, 2020
I would be interested depending on the cost. It is an interesting debate. The point that sold me recently is wearing a mask as a deterrent to touching may face. Touching your face is another big no-no and something we tend to do very often. Allergy season is in full bloom - constantly touching my nose and eyes. Love the giving one away option - would be nice if we could support the smaller hospitals.

D Benson

April 1, 2020
I will support your effort, sooner than later though

Cary

April 1, 2020
Good idea if you can donate one for each purchase directly, efficiently and immediatly to health care providers. Thank you. I would buy one

April 1, 2020
I think making masks is a great idea. There is more evidence coming out that wearing masks actually help. I also like the idea of donating masks to people and places that need them.

Uta Marie

April 1, 2020
Hi Etee Team,
That sounds fantastic! I will definitely buy and friends I asked would as well.
Great idea and great info !
Thanks and much success,

April 1, 2020
I would support this idea. We need to do all we can to get through this.

April 1, 2020
I would support it when I’m not in the front lines but other than that I have to use N95

Lisa

April 1, 2020
Yes, masks help! I would buy from you if you made them! Especially the buy one donate one model. I do that already with Bombas socks.

Katie

April 1, 2020
Make the masks and save surgical masks/N95 masks for healthcare professionals. The US is such a poop show that I am going to start wearing a fabric mask every time I'm in public. I'd buy them.

Cindy Chudacoff

April 1, 2020
NO; Cotton is not a good mask material, precisely because it breathes. COVID-19 droplets can get through the fibers of such masks, and in this case, something is not better than nothing. I applaud your sentiment, but save the fabric. stay safe and well and stay in business.

Diana Simone

April 1, 2020
Absolutely think this is a great idea. I am assuming the organic cotton masks are washable and reusable which will be a boost to the environment as well as protecting individuals health.

Suzanne Kendall

April 1, 2020
Great! Tell me when B2G1 starts.

Noelle Nichols

April 1, 2020
Yes, please move ahead and do it. We need them now. Even people who have N95 masks, or any other kind of mask, need them to go over their existing masks. Putting a cloth mask that can be washed and over an existing mask helps keep that mask sanitary and extends its life.

Melia

April 1, 2020
I think this is a fantastic idea! The Lt Governor of Hawaii who is also a physician has gone on record stating he believes wearing a mask out in public is better than not wearing anything at all. A friend of mine who is making masks by herself has sold 300. She makes them with a little pocket and slips a sanitary napkin inside. I don't know if thats helps, but it's just an idea! Stay safe friends!

Dana

April 1, 2020
Great idea! They'd be washable and easy to keep clean so it would make sense to purchase several. I would definitely be interested in purchasing for myself and family/friends.

Linda

April 1, 2020
Do it. I'd buy it they aren't too high. But you deserve to make some profit too.

Kimberly

April 1, 2020
So many low or no income people as well as patients attending clinics and in hospitals should be high priority for face masks especially those with filter pockets and filters to put in them, along with instructions on how to use them properly. This idea of yours would be great if we could guarantee that these demographics could receive masks without prejudice.

Cindy Spitzer

April 1, 2020
YES!
ASAP, PLEASE!

Kathy

April 1, 2020
Yes, please do this. I think many people would be glad to have a source to buy masks, rather than making their own or using masks that are so badly needed by medical professionals.

Carole

April 1, 2020
Yes please. Then we could hopefully purchase one and donate one.
A better option for protecting our families. One for each family member.

Arden Rayne

April 1, 2020
Yes I do support your program I just hope you aren't going to gouge everyone on the price. If you have some kind of filter material I would prefer it to have that. And they said that's any non-woven fabric. So that could be out of a vacuum cleaner bag or a tea towel from things I've read.
And I think everyone should be wearing the mask. For all long time we should all be wearing them. Unless you've already had the virus then you have no need to.

Karen A Aaltonen

April 1, 2020
If it would help your business and the general public, yes, it's a very good idea. The buy one donate one is a great concept being used by other manufacturers as well. It gives those not on the front line a way to help.

Karen Perkins

April 1, 2020
Yes! As long as you are not making a profit above and beyond your costs, I would purchase several masks for my family. The buy one give one idea is great!

I think it's a great idea and would definitely support it with an order.

Lia

April 1, 2020
YES!!! Please do make masks. If you do, I will buy several for me and my family. Donating one for every one bought is an excellent idea. Having grown up in Japan, I am totally comfortable with the rational act of wearing a mask in winter, which I do even in non-pandemic times. It prevents the flying of spittle that may contain bacteria or viruses. American authorities have been operating on an "either/or" model when it can and should be "and/plus": that is, we can reserve the high-powered medical grade masks for healthcare folks AND we can wear the less durable kind handed out in our doctor's offices. PLUS, we can make our own masks. Please do this. Every ounce of prevention does indeed help!

Anastasia

April 1, 2020
Really love the buy one donate one approach. And I firmly believe we should all be wearing masks.

GIlles mOreau

April 1, 2020
Go for it

Sherry

April 1, 2020
Yes! I will buy 3
Thanks!

Julie Braman

April 1, 2020
I would definitely buy one, if they were reasonably priced. I LOVE the idea that buying one for myself means another one gets donated to someone else in need of one, too. That is outstanding!! Even better would be if you also included an option to donate them to hospitals for medical workers to wear. That way, people who already own a reusable face mask but really want to help others during this pandemic, could purchase them strictly to be donated, if they'd like. Regardless, thank you for helping! This is wonderful! :-)

Ed Klorman

April 1, 2020
Excellent idea!

April 1, 2020
I would support this. A good sustainable option, and we must leave N95s and Disposable masks to health care providers on the front lines.

April 1, 2020
Yes. I would certainly purchase.

April 1, 2020
Yes I think it’s a fantastic idea, and I’d support by buying masks for my family and friends.

Cat

April 1, 2020
I would definitely buy masks for everyone I know! It offers us some protection when we practice all of the recommended safeguards AND it can protect others from the wearer should we have the virus without symptoms. It is still difficult to be tested in the USA for the virus, so you don’t really know whether you are positive or negative for the virus.

patricia masters

April 1, 2020
Absolutely-this is a marathon not a sprint-I’ll but one so that one gets donated though I am making my own. Want to support any grassroots positive efforts

Great idea! I would buy some.

April 1, 2020
Great idea! I would buy some.

Yep, this is a great idea. I hope the stigma of masks in the US can end soon — I already have a mask but would make a purchase as a donation.

Yes, I would buy a mask to help support this project.

Good idea. I’ve read the other comments about including a pocket for a filter. This sounds good too if you are also able to source and offer the filters.

Yes I will buy at least 10 depending on the price this will be A very long long long pandemic and I want to protect my self my family and everyone around me I am in

Jo Ann Heale

April 1, 2020
I'm part of a FB group called The Sewing Army and we're making face masks, scrub caps, gowns, etc. But the face masks are not suitable for frontline health care workers. I live in Toronto and Ontario is at the point in this epidemic (since we have stay-at-home directive) where face masks for the general public take away from the desperate need for face masks for frontline health care workers, esp doctors and nurses. The home made masks I'm making are for a Toronto hospital who is requesting them for visitors and non-patient serving staff. There is also a need for these in other places such as Retirement homes. If you have lots of organic cotton - perhaps making the gowns and caps would be more appropriate as this serves the desperate requests for PPE from hospitals.
JoAnn Heale

Judy

April 1, 2020
The first people who need it are the health care workers. Eventually everyone will have to wear one as a form of social distancing, so yes, start making them!!

LIll Robinson

April 1, 2020
This sounds like a wonderful idea and a great way “to make some lemonade” with the leftover fabric!

Becky

April 1, 2020
Yes, I support this idea, and would be willing to purchase both for myself and for donation, assuming the price does not seem way out of line.

April 1, 2020
I think this is a good idea. You should start immediately.

jayne MCKENZIE

Jo Ann

April 1, 2020
I would gladly support "buy one, donate one"

Sarah Baker

April 1, 2020
Awesome!

Abbey

April 1, 2020
I think it's a great idea. I like that your example picture shows that the mask has a label too because then you can make sure you're not planning it on your face backwards. Many people in my community have been making homemade masks to donate to hospitals and they can make it confusing which side should remain out.

Bob

April 1, 2020
Yes - we would buy one - important to support businesses that we believe in and I like your approach!

Christin Clancy

April 1, 2020
Yes please. I feel even when the worst is over, we may all need to wear masks outside our homes until we have a better understanding of the virus and readily available testing. Love the buy one donate one. Kiddos!

April 1, 2020
Yes, yes! This is a great idea and I love the buy one donate one idea.

Mary Kay Pumphrey

April 1, 2020
I support your efforts

Jenessa Franco

April 1, 2020
I would purchase for our entire family

Lea Ann Wood

April 1, 2020
Yes I think wearing a mask offers some protection versus none, as long as it has enough layers. Since droplets are airborne from just breathing, I think this could help in cases where social distancing is difficult, such as a grocery store. I love the buy one give one approach.

Linda Szulczewski

April 1, 2020
I think it's a good use of fabric and a good way to keep the business afloat. There should be at least 3 layers of fabric, unless the cotton is a very tight weave. As a nurse for over 45 years, the literature is up in the air about this, but there are so many people who just can't seem to get the 6 foot distance (and now we know the droplets can go up to 17 feet, and asymptomatic folks spread the virus just from talking)that I would definitely be interested in purchasing some. Like the donation idea. Thanks

Benjamin Powers

April 1, 2020
Works for me.

Riva

April 1, 2020
Totally make them. I’d buy 6, maybe even more depending on cost.

Arden Rayne

April 1, 2020
I think that we should be making them. if we have them and giving them to the health care workers if we can make them properly for them with N95 or what we have that's equivalent. I think we all should be wearing them all the time. Because like you said there are people that are asymptomatic and people that don't have symptoms yet and I am very upset that they're not thinking this through by telling only people with the virus to wear the mask. We all should be wearing them. and I'm sure you know this but if you have a HEPA vacuum bag that's filter inside that bag can be used for the mask. I think people are gouging us at this point I got an email that for $159 for a mask. That's crazy and outrageous. That's not helping us as a country or as human beings.

Tom

April 1, 2020
I've only just started with etee products, but definitely would consider buying these, particularly with the donation of a mask for each purchase.

Sheila

April 1, 2020
Yes, I would be interested in purchasing a mask, especially if I could also donate to those in need. I also like the suggestion to make sure inside and outside patterns are different to be able to tell the difference, making them washable, and making it possible to insert some kind of filter.

Tom

April 1, 2020
Yes, please make masks. If everyone wore a mask, we would greatly reduce the spread of this virus.

Alison

April 1, 2020
It's a great idea. I'll buy at least 4 and share the info with friends and family.

Kelda Bassham

April 1, 2020
Personally, seeing the stress frontline workers are experiencing due to lack of PPE, I think it would be more essential for these masks to be made and either sold or donated to hospitals who desperately needing supplies.

Loretta Stadler

April 1, 2020
I would support this.

Barbara Robinson

April 1, 2020
Great idea. I will take at least 2. Jump on this quickly. Guidelines will be changing to include civilian use of masks. Also, here in Chicago, I have seen many fabric masks already.

graham inglis

April 1, 2020
Hello i love your effort and would like to share them on my platforms
I would buy from you and donate them

Beth Helsley

April 1, 2020
I totally support this project. I wish they were ready for purchase now!

Faye Perkins

April 1, 2020
I think that you should make masks and charge appropriately for them. We all need them and will need them moving forward. I understand the perception of 'cashing in', but we need support viable businesses and the people who are doing the work. I am a big supporter of this initiative and I truly appreciate you asking for comments.

What I am hearing listening to Gavin Newsome is that masks are ok as long as you don’t think it takes the place of Social Distancing. Mask plus social distance !

April 1, 2020
Great idea! I hope it is a win-win for everyone.

Shannon Elliott

April 1, 2020
yes! a space for an insert filter would be best. (have read paper towels actually work as filters and still allow you to breath through mask!). All parts of masks need to be washable!

April 1, 2020
YES, I would definitely support this. And I also think the pocket for the filter is a good idea.

April 1, 2020
Yes, I would whole heartedly support this project. It would also be great if you could fabricate kid’s sized masks!

Curious about your ramp-up time & whether you'd use that great fabric.

I do agree with Casey and Megann. I buy and donate, working out a fair price. Count me in!

Sarah

April 1, 2020
Yes to making these, the 1:1 offer, determining the best mask pattern, and paying fair wages!! Thank you!!

Bonnie

April 1, 2020
YES!!! We are learning a lot about aerosol nature of this thing and everyone needs to waer a mask when out on essential trips as well as hand washing etc. Do make the inside fabric different than the outside fabric so you can tell which side has been inside and which worn outside. I would suggest making it possible for folks to slip in a filter of some kind between layers too as an option. Including standard guidelines about staying home when sick, etc, and machine washing. Thanks ETEE!! I would like to buy 4 of them.

Dwyne

April 1, 2020
No. Just another wishful item.

Mason

April 1, 2020
Nice of you to offer your fabric, and no doubt soon everyone will need something on the face, but for optimum protection, the latest fabric to utilize is hospital surgical wrap, explained here: https://anest.ufl.edu/clinical-divisions/alternative-n95-mask-production/?fbclid=IwAR28Fu8SfRvaykL1YeGMTtSmEHbvkgNFLWQrIPsPz3pLjhQqMbZBiSXlksY

Agreed, I will buy and I would accept donation too.

Charlotte TImberman

April 1, 2020
Yes you should start making them

Marsha Green

April 1, 2020
I think it is an excellent idea and would be interested. I am in Houston, Texas. I have a limited amount of masks. Let us know!

Marilyn

April 1, 2020
Great idea, but have you spoken with any medical experts to find out how effective your masks would be? If they aren't, perhaps you could use the cotton to make something else that healthcare workers could use. I have no idea what it might be, but I think it's worth checking out the possibilities. Blessings to you for wanting to help in this way!!!

Beth

April 1, 2020
Yes, please make masks. I would like to order a dozen right now. How soon can you get them made?

Debra Brussels Pelchat

April 1, 2020

April 1, 2020
Let's do this!

James Ravenscroft

April 1, 2020
I support this idea. As Westerners, we tend to be suspicious of the Chinese government but the Chinese people are turning the corner. If they recommend face masks in public who am I to dispute it.

Dustin Crumbaugh

April 1, 2020
I think this is a great idea! Would you make any with a space for a PM2.5 filter?

Reba

April 1, 2020
Great idea - are you set on the design? From what I’ve read the most effective ones ensure coverage of nose and mouth and have the option (a pocket) to insert a disposable filter.

FABRICE FLORIN

April 1, 2020
I think it's a good idea, for the rest of us who can't get masks on our own. If masks become required, we will need a solution, and I would definitely consider getting cotton masks from Etsy.

If you go ahead with this, be sure to contact health providers first, to see if they could use them as well. If they do, they should get priority over us. Or maybe for every mask we buy, one gets donated to a health or service provider who needs it?

If you don't go ahead with this, you might like to share this link with the Etsy community, which shows folks how to make their own No-Sew Pleated Face Mask with Handkerchief and Hair Tie: http://blog.japanesecreations.com/no-sew-face-mask-with-handkerchief-and-hair-tie

Janet Gilmore

April 1, 2020
I think the view about masks is starting to shift in the US to everyone should be wearing them. Apparently, people can have the virus and never know it but they transmit. We could be dealing with this for a very long time. The NYTimes printed a pattern for masks today and I am going to make some but it will be a pittance against what is needed. I would gladly support your efforts.

Bibi Prival

April 1, 2020
Why wouldn't you? They are needed and you have the materials. Get started, we all need them.

Suzanne

April 1, 2020
This certainly makes sense. If you have the fabric, why not start sewing and selling them?

Dana

April 1, 2020
Great idea, would be happy to help support!

While some facilities are breaking down FDA requirements because they don't have enough supplies, facilities still need to be using products that are medical grade standards and cleared by the FDA. I would suggest getting in contact with facilities who know the requirements and can help navigate how they should be made so they keep hospital staff and who ever use them actually safe and then contract manufacture them for those facilities. Raw materials for these products are scarce and this could be a solution.

Yes, I would be interested in this sort of offer for our family to order face masks. Love the buy 1, donate 1 approach.

I think homemade masks can't hurt, especially in situations where you can't be certain that people will respect social distancing guidelines, like grocery shopping. If people have access to alternatives, they may be less likely to hoard disposable masks that should be going to our healthcare workers. The fabric should be tightly woven 100% cotton and there should be 3 layers of fabric.

Can't hurt. There must be SOME reason folks in Asia are using them.

Deborah

April 1, 2020
If you have a hospital or doctors office that would take them, I would donate for you to give to them. I don't need masks for myself. (we have masks at home, or can make our own). But the medical field is short on PPE. Bureaucracy in communicating with them is tricky though... But if you have a specific organization that you can donate masks to, then I'd donate to you.

Mina

April 1, 2020
Yes for sure! Love that idea

I say make the masks (and thank you!). They're more necessary to protect others than yourself- these types of masks can't prevent the virus molecules from getting through to you, but they CAN prevent any coughs or sneezes from YOU landing on nearby people or surfaces. They are helpful to have, just not for the reason many people think.

Alice

April 1, 2020
Please do. When it’s available, we will purchase it, for all my family and friends. Strongly supported. Thank you.

Barbara

April 1, 2020
Yes. Good idea. Suggest you include instructions to wash out daily and dry overnight and remind purchasers to remember masks do not replace social distancing, they only augment it. And they don’t make it okay to go out when sick. Thanks.

AShley

April 1, 2020
I’m a doctor and they are not helpful at all. They need to be a special kind if you’re close to other people. Social distancing is the best as the virus cannot live on inanimate objects but they can be passed if touched immediately/shortly after

Claire

It seems worth a try. They would make good gifts.
The concern with masks is that they can give a false sense of security. Mask or no mask, people need to social distance and vigilantly wash hands.

Steve

Yes we should all be wearing masks. The cotton masks could be washed and sanitized. Filtering masks could be more available to the front line workers.

I wholeheartedly agree. Especially if you make it with the elastic bands. As a healthcare provider, I agree that some protection is better than no protection. Although once you have the mask on, try not to touch your face, if you are constantly adjusting the mask, it defeats the purpose.

Mary Calabrese

April 1, 2020
I absolutely think you should go ahead with it...It is a GREAT idea. I completely believe that by wearing a mask, it prevents me from touching my face- I went grocery shopping without one and had to constantly refrain from scratching my nose or my chin or whatever! Having that cloth covering my face from chin to bridge of my nose absolutely stops me from doing that. It also prevents any "droplets" that may come from me that may infect others if I were to have the virus unknowingly. I've been now sewing dozens for food delivery volunteers in my community who bring meals and groceries to senior citizens. I give your idea a BIG thumbs up.

Barbara

Ensuring the safety of your employees should be the first priority.
The general public may feel safer by wearing a mask when they need to shop for necessities. Giving the general public an option to purchase these types of masks and saving the N95 for those on the front line I think is important.
If you also do a buy program that supports purchasing with the capability to also help keep you in business and give back through a donation I would be very supportive. Keeping people employed, giving viable options to help protect the public, and supporting front line workers are three extremely important objectives right now. Great initiative, I would support.
Thank you

May I suggest making headbands with a button on each side so that healthcare workers who have to wear masks for many hours can decrease irritation to skin around ears from elastic. I’d certainly buy a few:-))

Cathren Cougill

April 1, 2020
Just today in the New York Times there was an article about needing to shift to people wearing masks... more evidence is reflecting this position. I would buy some... I like the buy one donate one idea. I no longer have a sewing machine and I don’t want to try to find them or take from medical professionals in need. But having some on hand for when I have to go out would be great. We are in Detroit and live so close to the main hospital... a little creepy to think about what might be in the air. Thanks so much.

Jacqueline

April 1, 2020
I think the buy one get one would be great. I have been considering making masks but don’t have fabric (so would need to obtain) this would be a great way to make lemonade from lemons! (The fall of the food wrap idea)

Jennifer Mercury

April 1, 2020
I’m in. This would make me feel like I am helping the cause. I have friends in the medical industry that tell me its only a matter of time that we will all be wearing masks to protect others. I value your company and products and I would purchase.

Kathleen L

April 1, 2020
What an inspired way to use materials you have on hand. As long as they can be made safely (for your staff) then I would most definitely support a buy one donate one program. I don't think western "experts" are open to advice from others and often underestimate the consequences of waiting.

April 1, 2020
I would support this initiative. I would love a mask but I feel like they should all go to healthcare settings--even cloth ones. But a buy one/give one model might make me feel better about getting one for myself. It makes it less of an either/or philosophical dilemma, and allows me to do both while also supporting a store that I also value. Keep us posted!

April 1, 2020
I’ve read that washed tea towels are best, next to hepa filters like vacuum bags. would buy if they were prewashed cotton and had ties, not elastic. I wear glasses so I was going to try and put wire at the nose to avoid fogging. I would buy and gift them if available. With kids at home, elaborate craft time is limited (I’m no seamstress!). This is the one I was going to try to make. https://www.craftpassion.com/face-mask-sewing-pattern/

I believe that we should be wearing masks when out in public, even while keeping the 6' distance rule. Although it may not be the perfect solution to prevent acquiring the virus, it will help prevent spreading the virus to others. We could be infected and not know it. I would buy masks if you sold them, and am completely on board with the "buy one, donate one" suggestion.

Elizabeth Bramley

I would buy some for sure, the public will need to wear these as a minimum protection and a maximum help in preventing spread.

https://youtu.be/W6d3twpHwis Please visit this link before making anything. Cotton is great for the outside but what really matters is the filter you use inside. Hepa vacuum cleaner bags and other good nonwoven material (that you can breathe through) is necessary to make the masks effective.

April 1, 2020
I would buy some! Just to clarify though, wearing cloth or even surgical masks will prevent the person wearing it from spreading an infection if they have one, and possible prevent the wearer from touching their own face, thus preventing droplet transmission from dirty hands. Only an N95s will aid in preventing the person wearing it from getting an infection.
Thanks!

It’s a question a lot of industry people are thinking about. Some are converting to production and sales to scale up for needed masks. Others are doing a buy one donate one thing and still others are making masks and just donating them. We are as a country finally purchasing masks from China again. If there seems to be immediate need I. Your community or if we institute a policy where everyone needs to wear a mask in public it would probably be worth what you put into the effort. If you do make them be sure to make them with a pocket where a charcoal packet or antimicrobial loner can be inserted. And yes I would buy some

ALan

April 1, 2020
Yes, I’d buy a couple. Florida just got put on lockdown, but we’ll still have to venture out to get food and medical supplies. We should be wearing masks when we do. It’s a natural extension of social distancing.

Absolutely! Count me in. If you can get ahold of filter fabric, like those used for vacuum bags, they can be placed in a pocket of a cloth mask to give a higher level of protection. NOTE: filter is for one use only, and must be discarded and replaced after each use.

This would be a wonderful decision as you as a new company would be providing an essential need product that is not exactly available to consumers. Amazon lists masks, however these are not ready to ship products and the delays consumers will see if they order from Amazon is more than 30 days with heavily inflated prices. Many of the online masks available are disposable and a box of 50 will go very quickly - so having a cotton washable protective face mask that can be worn and reused is key. Our medical professionals I believe would benefit from this as well, especially if you add a pocket for maybe a carbon filter. Dont let your cotton material sit now when you can do something great - helping consumers protect and in turn we help our front line workers. A Win Win. Thanks

Kim
